Drone skill question

I have a quick question thats been puzzling me about a certain drone skill: Drone Sharpshooting. This increases drone opt range by like 5% a level or something, but is this a good thing? wouldn't it be better to have their speed way up and have their range short so they can benefit from their speed vs. tracking speed?
Apologies if this question has been posted before or done to death

sure I can see the benefit there, but the skill doesn't only apply to sentry drones right?

you do know that there is no negative to being within optimal right? so longer optimal is only good.

It is also affecting normal drones and it gives rly an advantage.

advanced drones (like Warrior II) are damn fast, even faster when using drone navigation computer. the higher speed results also in a higher orbiting speed and that leads to that the drone is further away from the target in combat mode, sometimes their own speed throw them out of optimals, maybe deep into falloff.

That means, more optimalrange boosts the effective dps of normal drones. But ofc, sentry drones benefits most from that skill

The further your drone orbits off a target the more it helps thier tracking as they the guns used don't have to spin as far in the same amount of time. A.K.A. less tracking needed to hit target.

Basicly this skill improve the landed dps of all your drones.

This. There's a very common misconception that tracking declines in some sort of dependent relationship with optimal; this is not the case. Optimal and tracking are totally independent one another with regards to hit chance and hit quality. Or to put it another way, being inside optimal range is fine so long as you can track, and that's determined not by range but by tracking speed itself.

If your drones are chasing a target that is trying to kite them, having a longer optimal and thus being able to shoot from a further distance may make a big difference in their ability to apply damage.

That and sentries, as previously mentioned.

In the cat-and-mouse game that is low sec, there is no shame in learning to be a better mouse.
