The Sub-warp Racing Venture is back to host another frigate race, and this time bigger than ever!

The prize pool for this extravagant test of speed and technical ability is a whopping 1.5 BILLION ISK! That's right, one and a half BILLION ISK in prizes!

The format of this event is one-on-one tournament, single elimination.

Ship Restrictions: T1 frigates. (No faction, T2 etc.)

This restriction exists for several reasons.
To level the playing field between newer and older pilots, as well as preventing someone from showing up and making a complete fool of themselves when they realise their 8 000m/s interceptor is too fast to navigate the race track.

Module Restrictions: Anything goes.

Why? Because the difference between T1, T2, and faction equipment on a T1 racing frigate is not huge, and we don't want the overhead of having to scan every contestant to enforce compliance.

Prizes:

First place: 1 billion ISK
Second place: 300 million ISK
Third place: 100 million ISK

Fourth through eighth places each: 10 million ISK

To sign up for the race simply send an eve-mail to Julius Rigel with your character name and your team name.

You don't have to be on a "real" team to compete. Your team name can be anything you want it to be, within reason. But if you are part of a racing team, your captain will probably want you to sign up under your proper team name.

If you're looking for a team to join, or you have any other questions, ask around in channel "FRIGATE RACE".

I'm in for Aug 4th.

But I am still torn about whether the new gates are all good. While pilot skill certainly needs to be appreciated, I am not sure if the intention of a course layout should be to "instakill" the pilot making the making the first mistake. Where the old gates allow you to overshoot somewhat - or even give you the choice to favor speed over agility - unless you cut the turn you could more easily catch up to the opponent by keeping flying forward.

The new gates, however, you miss much more easily; they have four edges you must hit instead of just one boundary. While at the same time, after a miss, turning around and "still making" the gate in a second attempt I do not see as a viable option. Not as in: an option that allows you to still win the race. It simply takes too much time to make up.

And then there is the visibility: the old gates would display themselves ( I am talking about a race overview with canisters on and tactical overlay ) as a fence-wall of plumblines where you can gradually see the lines pass the ship as you fly around it.

No such thing with the new gates : at horizontal turns you must hit the square and from the moment of clicking into space it is hit-or-miss, no correction possible as I see it. On vertical turns, you do see the perpendicular blooms in front of your ship on the tactical pane, however you need to dive/climb into that "chimney" that is formed by the four lines again with an extreme low margin of error.

Is this just me not being used to the new format after racing three seasons the other way and now pausing a year ?!

We've had plenty of time to discuss this already. There's no need to bring such matters into the promotional topic.

Yes.

That's exactly it, in fact.

The new format of racing, from the track to the restrictions to everything else is specifically designed to have a higher standard of skill, both in terms of knowing the race track, as well as knowing your ship.

It's obvious you're going to have a hard time when you've neither taken the time to practice the course, nor to calibrate your ship.
