What are the specific difference when mining in .5 vs something like .8. I know ore is a little different and it is easier to gank in a .5 but what are the specific differences? What would one expect to find different with the ore and what exactly makes it easier to gank?

Yes, this is a noob question.

There are different kinds of ore, also the rats will be hearder.

The lower the security level, the longer it takes CONCORD to respond (I guess the donuts are better).

In terms of the ore itself, in lower security systems you will find higher volumes of ore, and more of the higher-yield variants of that ore. There are also differences between systems at the same security level in the layout of each asteroid belt: for example in one 0.6 system you might find belts that have a few large asteroids close together while in the next system you'll have wide belts composed of nothing better than gravel (asteroids which are depleted in less than two cycles of a strip miner).

As an example, head out to Aldilur (assuming it's not mined dry) and check out the variety of asteroid belts there. A few of them are "wall of rock" style, others are "scattered gravel" style.

One differance is that you can't anchor in 0.8.
This matters for those who are new and are using mining cruiser / Giant secure container / Indy combo.

I will have to explore around and scan these wall o minerals you talk about.

The "asteroids which are depleted in less than two cycles of a strip miner" is a familiar thing to me. I would like to see something I don not have to re target every couple minutes

You'll want to have a poke around in 0.5 systems, especially those without stations.

Not entirely, as long as you find a system with a decent number of belts that's a bit out of the way you'll be able to find nice big juicy asteroids pretty easily.

.5 and .6 systems are the best I find for getting the most out of each rock. Oddly enough, I find MUCH less problems with gankers as well (although you have to watch local more, since it actually matters a bit there).

Look around on the maps for systems with only 1 way in, 2 tops, that are kind of out of the way from the normal traffic (amarr, jita lines etc). If it only has 1 or 2 stations, great.

Usually there will be other miners in systems like this, and they tend to be pretty good about banding together if a small gank squad or solo pirate tries to come in and cause grief. It may take a week or 2 for them to get used to you however, so expect conversation invitations to get a feel for you, and to see shows of power (their heavier combat ships staying very close to their miners, etc) until they associate you with the landscape.

There is a special Hell for people like that, Right next to child molestors, and people that talk in the theater. ~Firefly

The Spod in upgraded Sov systems will also fix your "depleted quickly" problem. Of course, it'll replace it with a "Oh god, make it Pop" problem, but I digress.

Systems without stations tend to have bigger roids because nobody mines them as they're inconvenient (you really want a POS to store your ore until you can freighter it out).

After you get past getting your feet wet in EVE you rapidly discover that the majority of griefing and ganking happen around rookie systems because they are easy targets and around Jita because of the high numbers of high value targets in the area.
Get out in remote EVE and the population thins out and players are free mostly of the griefing and ganking.

True in general but I have found Eve-based ass-hattery pervasive throughout the entire universe. There tends to be a lot more in places like Jita and Amarr though, but only a loon would mine anywhere near those.
