Parsing the combat log

There are many sites out there that have damage profiles of the various NPC factions and I have always been curious on how this information is retrieved. I have looked at my logs and for combat information all I ever see is: 'Arch Angel Foo glancing blow for 15 damage' or very similar to those lines (I can't read my logs being at work at the moment).

So how do people narrow down exactly what and how much damage is being done? Is there a formulas page somewhere that my poor googling skills are failing to find? Or did people painstakingly put on different tanks, go out, get shot, grab log, switch tank, get shot again, etc. finally comparing all the logs vs. the different tanks at the end to come up with a number?

Or maybe I am completely blind and was too tired last night when looking so I skipped over some pertinent information in the logs.

I would really like to start keeping track of my own information in regards to combat for both PvE and even PvP if I can make it applicable, so if anyone can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

Thank you.

**EDIT
I did just find this: http://eveboard.com/combat/

But I would still be interested in setting up something for myself.

LogServer has more details, but you're not allowed to datamine it. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Log_Server

NPC data was originally in the Eve database dump, but CCP stopped including it. However, most NPC haven't changed. The stats for new NPCs, such as sleepers, had to be estimated based on observations.

Pon Farr Memorial: once every 7 years, all the carebears in high-sec must PvP or they will be temp-banned.

I will have to give that tool a try, thanks for the info. It is too bad that there is no way to calculate the damage types done to you be it PvE or PvP, it could be handy to have all that data stored and able to run reports on it.
