Anyone who had paid for the service should be protected from having thier names wiped out.

agree. but maybe also for paid accounts after 2 years of inactivity.
send them 3 mails, free up the name if there is no reaction / objection coming from them. i even expect most of those email addresses to be invalid ;)

I know lots of people who have gone for two to three years and come back. Trials only.

with my suggestion they just needed to reply / click, "i am still interested, please dont release my name", then they will stay untouched.

Yeah, I was checking up on some names and the one I wanted was taken by a '03 trail account still in the naval academy, it has been inactive for almost a decade.

Clean up the database and rid those dead accounts.

How can you tell exactly, that the character has been inactive for the last 10 years?

And how can you tell it is a trial account?

+1 providing it's never-paid trials only. (I realise the OP said this, but some people *cough* el alasar *cough* have suggested taking out inactive paid accounts too. This should not happen.)
I've never personally had an issue with name conflicts, but this would free up a lot of names, and probably also take some load off the server.

It's such a shame the same will never happen to you

All my eve mail for my alt account goes to my spam address. I've had it for four years and I've never checked it.

I agree, on a rolling basis EVERY trial account over 1 year old and never converted should be wiped out totally.

It would just take some time and careful scripting to do, but CCP is capable, as long as no one named themselves boot.ini

While I would say that most people moaning about "names being already taken" usually try to choose some inane moniker like "xXxGankerxXx" or trying to have a ripoff from some movie, book or whereever I'd support the idea of cleaning up the account database. Trial accounts only.

Though I think that would never happen as that would drastically reduce the number of accounts EvE Online can claim to have.

Supported, usual caveat of old trial accounts only. Non-trial accounts, obviously, have worthwhile stuff, and have paid for the privilege of keeping their account info active in the system.

I saw a cool name (which probably isn't even a name but a description) and I want it. I am not capable of thinking of a name myself.

Seriously, sometimes people do come back after a long time and you absolutely don't ever do this or they are pissed off and gone for good. Very bad business practise.

I would be curious to know just how much server space would be freed up if they deleted all the trial accounts.

Dormant paid accounts too.

What right do you think you are 'owed' if you paid 14 dollars for 1 month and then didnt play for 7 years?

If you do not pay for your car lease, it gets repo'd
If you do not pay for your house mortgage, the bank takes it back
If you do not pay rent, you get thrown out.

Only in eve you pay nothing - you still 'own it'.

Put in a 6 month to a 1 year dormant state clause, if that hapens your player gets COPIED to a backup server.
If you come back - you pick a new name if your old one is taken and life goes on.

When an account goes dormant the player is forced into an npc corp as well.

There is no way for a corp to know currently if a player is 'active' or not.

If I didnt pay for 1 year - i would fully expect to 'lose something', and with my above suggestion, I do not lose my 'skill time' i have put in the game, I just lose my magical name that I seem somehow so attached to a digital character.

Its not about whats owed or not owed, and its not about revenge for not subscribing longer, its about ensuring we don't end up in a shallow name pool.

The vast majority of names are held on trial accounts. Deleting trial accounts is unarguably fair, and will release 75% of the names, at least. The only benefit to deleting paid accounts is that it will release specific names people might want.

In exchange, it makes the chance of those people resubscribing almost zero. Think about it, if you played for a while, decided eve needed growing time and left it for two years, came back and discovered that your name had been taken from you, would you feel charitable toward the publisher?

Of course not. So from that standpoint, trial account is all that's neccisary.

And its $21 to subscribe for the first time.
