I am not the one to tell you how to raise your daughter, but....does a two year old girl really have to be educated to spend time with video games?
The research fields of internet/media addiction an their influence especially on child development are rather new still, but all evidence points toward extensive computer use doing more harm than benefit to young children.

Maybe it is a good thing that the playerbase of eve are a bunch of antisocial, evil griefers.
How about you just take your daughter to a zoo or go swimming with her instead?

Sorry, I have to respond here, while I agree that kids need fresh air and exercise there are many studies that show benefits to video gaming as well, hell I have been gaming since I was 5 and I am pretty sure I turned out OK, just ask my mom, I am sure she will back me up.

The field is far from decided, if a kid shows interest in gaming let them.

lol @ people letting the NIH tell them how to raise children.

^ Nope I was too busy playing video games. And was not impressed at their taming of elephants.

I would like to start off by thanking all of you guys for all the mature responses to this post. I KNEW this community was a cut above most other games.

I started playing this game because a good friend of mine assured me that if I can get past the initial complexity, I would really enjoy this game... I have and I do. TBH the very first time I got ganked I kinda let it happen. The ganker caught me with my pants down while I was mining and listening to music. Before I knew what was going on he was already well into my armor and there was nothing I could do. I did not panic or get angry. I just sat back and enjoyed the spectacle. I was curious to see if he/she would pod me. I was told that it is ok to destroy someone's ship, but bad sportsmanship to destroy their pod. Needless to say I got podded lol. I wasn't angry at all and actually enjoyed the experience. This is EVE, and as such, I am aware that I am going to lose ships.

As for my daughter...

I honestly don't use EVE as an educational tool for her, but more as bonding time. When she sees me playing she wants to get involved and I embrace teaching her how to play on a game like EVE. Why EVE? Here is my reasoning. I believe EVE to be a very deep game on many levels. At this time I am currently teaching her how to recognize symbols (such as the undock button in every station), and how to interact with them (mousing over the symbol and clicking). When she sees the ship undock and start flying in space, she gets excited and feels a sense of accomplishment. She is only 2 years old and will not understand this game to the level we will, but in time as she gets older I can teach her the more intricate parts of the game like the economy. I would much rather teach her to play on games like EVE than games like WoW.

As for me joining other corporations...

I came to this game with a few friends that I have been gaming with for years. A few of us have been playing this game for years and some of us are fresh starters. We started a small corp and are working towards making our own lil POS. We understand that we are gonna get bullied and harassed by bigger, meaner corps/alliances from time to time, and we are ok with that. I would never leave my friends to join a bigger more established corp. I wouldn't mind joining an alliance but TBH I don't see why an established corp/alliance would want to team up with us. We don't have much to offer an alliance at this time, but we are working very hard an hope to earn our keep in New Eden.

I honestly feel if this were any other game the community would have trolled this post apart. You guys have confirmed my original belief that this is the type of community I want to game with. I understand that, at this current point in time, EVE is not a friendly place for new players like me looking to make a living by mining. I am not a carebear and growing up in the Bronx has taught me to never back down from challenge bullies. Instead of letting recent events discourage me from a great game, I am now the proud owner of 3 accounts. I may not be able to do much with them now but in a few months I might have a little surprise for anyone looking to gank my miner >:)

Once again I would like to thank all the mature, intelligent men and women who responded to my newbie post. I really look forward to playing EVE and experiencing everything this game has to offer... good and bad.

As a new player, I am a little confused on how I am supposed to enjoy this game. I have tried several times to get into this game but I feel like it is impossible. The player base here is just too rude to allow new players to enjoy this game. I have spent many hours reading the forums. I see posts on Hulkageddon stating that miners are being ganked because its frowned upon and not considered "playing the game". I enjoy mining because I can sit my 2 year old daughter on my lap and actually begin to teach her how to play computer games. Kinda hard when I am constantly losing mining ships to players that have stacked PVP ships.

You could also teach her something useful.

Anyway, You can defend Hulks from any profitable Gank in HS. Tank them, keep them aligned, keep a guard posted, etc.

Seek out some of the lesser known systems if you want to mine, those further away from any hub what so ever.
That will keep you safer, not absolutely safe.
So you still need to keep an eye on local and not trust anyone that appears in the same belt as you Big smile

make some friends, go mission in fleets together or whatever.. just dont try and play solo... you will find yourself unsubbing after a few months.

better yet, try and find a decent corp with a few other noobs. preferably one with active wars. high sec wars CAN be fun

He says he plays with his daughter on his lap.

Try Eve University. They can help and you wont have to worry about whats being said on coms.

This is your best bet for getting into the game with a less aggressive and more helpful group of people.

The best advice is to get into a corp that suits your gameplay, the fun with come with it.

As for the community, some people around here think they are special and have a high IQ just because they play EVE, it's a stupid syndrome that some developed with the years, they think that this is the most complex game in the market!

Forget the forum, it's a shadow of what it was some years ago.

slightly higher IQ and therefore I assumed the player base would be a little more civilized.
