Incompatible (Build) after supposedly successful (launcher?) update

Update: Proxy/caching issue. Anyone else having the same problem see my next post for the solution that worked for me.

When I run EVE, the launcher reports that the client is ready. I click play. Status:" Incompatible (Build)". A dialog ("ready to update") pops up informing me that "the client will now close and the update process begin" (the first time I started the client today, it downloaded an update before showing the aforementioned dialog). The client closes, asking for permission to run a file called "EveOnlineLauncherInstaller_TQ_1320.exe". I accept and the update completes without errors. The launcher starts up again. I click play. "Incompatible (Build)". The client then wants to install the same update again. This repeats itself indefinitely.

I've tried pretty much everything on my end (in various permutations):
- rebooted
- cleared cache
- ran eve in safe mode
- ran eve as administrator
- ran ExeFile directly
- ran ExeFile directly as admin
- tried repair.exe (completes without errors and without making any changes as far as i can tell)
- tried repair.exe as admin (completes without errors and without making any changes as far as i can tell)
- renamed the launcher directory in the game folder to force repair.exe to recreate it and its contents

This happens for both installations of EVE on my PC.

The launcher's title bar says "EVE Online Launcher v.1.32", which sounds a lot like what a file called "EveOnlineLauncherInstaller_TQ_1320.exe" might be trying to install...

Hi! Could you check, which version the client has, after you start it from the launcher? It should be 7.42.395090 (the version should be displayed at the top left corner of the login screen).

Btw: 1.32 is the correct version for the launcher.

After running into the same problem on another computer using the same internet connection, I switched to a 3G network. When I started EVE, the launcher downloaded and installed an update, after which I could log in without the client trying to install any launcher updates. This means the problem was most likely caused by my ISP. Probably something caching-related.

My guess is the reason why the EVE client kept trying to install the launcher update was because it wrongly assumed the fact that its version was incompatible with the server must mean that the launcher is not up to date. This error case should probably be handled differently.

Update: After switching back to my regular internet connection, the launcher patched my client (which i had just updated to version 7.42.395090 using my 3g dongle) back to 7.42.394353. So I really must be getting outdated and/or cached version check responses from the content servers when using my primary internet connection. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Update 2: Disabling my HTTP proxy allows me to properly patch and launch EVE. So it seems the content servers use HTTP while the game servers (obviously) do not, so my HTTP proxy giving me cached responses caused this version hiccup.

ToDo list for CCP:

  • Improve error handling in cases where the launcher unexpectedly does not update the client to the version the game servers expect.
  • Add proxy settings to the launcher settings so players can turn off their proxies just for EVE / the launcher without having to turn them off for their entire system.
