Last week I asked what was the minimum probe scan strength needed to scan down what used to be an unprobable ship. I didn't get a real answer. Only things hear say and people bragging about: hey I have max skills and a full virtue set.

That wasn't what I wanted to know. With a full virtue set and maximum skills you can scan everyone down, that's no rocket science.

What I wanted to know though, what is the minimum that's needed. So, lacking any real answer I decided to test it on Sisi. So, here's a tldr: You don't need perfect skills to be able scan what was previously an unscannable ship. The minimum scan strength needed is not higher then 79.6 but not lower then 76.5

What DO you need:
The only perfect skill I'd say you need is the skill that gives you scanbonus to your scanning ship: That means either Covert Ops to V or the electronics subsystem for Tech3 ships to V.

The other skills can keep at IV
Astrometrics IV
Astrometric RangeFinding IV
Cybernetics IV

What you also need is
-Implants:
The low-grade virtueset, but only the first 5(4), not the ridiculously expensive low-grade virtue omega.
Proteque 'Prospector' Astrometric Rangefinding AR-806 (not that this is the middle not the top one).

Here are my test results:

Probing the unprobable:

Test 1
Max bonused probing ship.
7 probes used
Astrometric rangefinding III
Low-Grade Virtue Alpha
Low-Grade Virtue Beta
Low-Grade Virtue Gamma
Low-Grade Virtue Delta
Low-Grade Virtue Epsilon
Proteque 'prospector' Astrometric Rangefinding AR-806
Best hit : 92.87%
Base Sensor Strength For Combat Scanner Probe: 76.5
Tengu: Gravimetric Sensor Strength 260
Signature Radius 157

Test 2
Max bonused probing ship.
8 probes used
Astrometric rangefinding III
Low-Grade Virtue Alpha
Low-Grade Virtue Beta
Low-Grade Virtue Gamma
Low-Grade Virtue Delta
Low-Grade Virtue Epsilon
Proteque 'prospector' Astrometric Rangefinding AR-806
Best hit : 97.57%
Base Sensor Strength For Combat Scanner Probe: 76.5
Cheetah: Ladar Sensor Strength 141
Signature Radius 46

Test 3 -success
Max bonused probing ship.
7 probes used
Astrometric rangefinding IV
Low-Grade Virtue Alpha
Low-Grade Virtue Beta
Low-Grade Virtue Gamma
Low-Grade Virtue Delta
Low-Grade Virtue Epsilon
Proteque 'prospector' Astrometric Rangefinding AR-806
Best hit : 100%
Base Sensor Strength For Combat Scanner Probe: 82.4
Cheetah: Ladar Sensor Strength 141
Signature Radius 46

Test 4 -success
Max bonused probing ship.
8 probes used
Astrometric rangefinding IV

Low-Grade Virtue Beta
Low-Grade Virtue Gamma
Low-Grade Virtue Delta
Low-Grade Virtue Epsilon
Proteque 'prospector' Astrometric Rangefinding AR-806
Best hit : 100%
Base Sensor Strength For Combat Scanner Probe: 79.6
Cheetah: Ladar Sensor Strength 141
Signature Radius 46

ok...ill go first...

"Tengu: Ladar Sensor Strength 141" I hope to god you mean gravimetric....

secondly, unless youre testing this in a Class 6 wolf rayet WH and using a strong x-instinct pill with a maxed out loki boosting it (possible I soppose), there's no way to get 46 sig on a tengu so you might want to check that.

that said, your finding are basically exactly what I told you in your last post, ie: maxed skills, prospector and first 4 virtues... so, yeah theyre probably about right.

obviously as you found, if you dont have maxed skills, ie: rangefinding 4, you need the 5th virtue.
i'll also point out that getting a 10% prospector is far cheaper than getting another virtue implant.

TBH, it's really rather irrelevant.
If youre already going for it and forking out 1.5-1.7bil for probing implants, you really may as well go all the way and do it properly.
it's not like that extra bil of implants is going to make you more careful than you already should be.

There is no Bob.

I was using 2 toons and that was a bad copy/paste action. Should have read cheetah.

I find paying over a billion for the 6th virtue and Astrometrics Rangefinding V training for over 30 days quite substantial.
If you can scan someone down is binary, you either can or can't and what I was looking for was specifically the lowest number needed.
That and the 10% prospector needs cybernetics V.

Cool stuff!

I guessed 80+ would suffice, was pretty close. Too bad it's not achievable without the Virtues, I can reach only 73 or so with the 10% hardwire.
