POS set-up and general questions from a noob.

So I have started getting two toons ready to get into inventing and research/whatnot. I am thinking of moving in to a crappy empty c3 (one no one would want to live in for sites/whatnot) and setting up a POS to do this. My main reasons for choosing a WH over high/low are that:

a) I would most likely be getting very little traffic through my system
b) most traffic would not want to engage the POS as their exit would be going poof in <16 hours
c) PI in a WH is excessively lucrative.
d) mining/gas sucking can also extremely lucrative

Now comes my biggest problem: Most of the guides on POS in general are severely outdated and I know little of POSes. SO I am pleading for a kind soul to explain a few things/answer a few questions for me, and give any general tips and pointers. I would want to be setting up research/mining/gas harvesting in said POS so off the start I would most likely be setting up a Large POS. If it can be ran with a medium please let me know as saving money every month would be nice.

Which racial tower should I set up? I had looked into faction ones, but spending close to 5b on one isn't something my wallet can handle at the moment.

Which, and how many of each non-defense modules should I set into the POS to run an effective invention, mining, and gas harvesting set up? Or, would this require 2 POS set ups which I most likely won't do?

What defensive mods should I hook in, and which configurations? I have seen things about a death star, a dickstick, etc but not sure which to go with. Keep in mind that I would most likely have little to no actual combat reinforcements from myself or my alts. I would essentially be banking on my reinforcement status and their hole closing for them to scram off.

Is this even something that would be profitable? I am planning on running 2 toons with mining/gas harvesting/research/invention. Will have 4 or 5 characters running PI, and will have one character able to fly a Tengu to clear the sigs and possible anoms (in a c3). I also have not figured out what I should be doing in the terms of invention and research. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any help in this Very much apprecaited

You'll need a heavy up-front investment to put up a tower in WH space. And the exit going poof is meaningless. Once people are in, they can just scan the new exits as they come, it's completely irrelevant how long the hole lasts. If you want to set up in a wormhole by yourself, a C1 is your only option really. Anything else means they can bring in battleship fleets to take you down. And they will.

Awesome, thank you. I believe I am going to use this setup that you described as I am mostly going to be going turtle mode if for some reason I do get attacked. That being said, what research/manufacturing, and mining/harvesting mods should I set up on the inside? I would like to do inventing in the hole as well as doing ore compression and gas reactions.

i agree that you should find a C1 with either a lowsec or a null sec static. the static is the most important factor due to it's one jump mass restriction and frequency of visitors. i believe your best bet would be a null sec static that you may come across randomly from a HS nonstatic. theres always a chance a random WH will open from a neighboring system in any WH and a random chance to get LS or HS nonstatics for moving out your PI loot. C1s, specifically ones with no bonuses (are all C1s no bonus?) are generally undesirable as are static LS and especially nullsec statics. a personal theory of mine as well is the number of planets affect its desirability. even though a system may only have 4-6 planets - that is plenty for a solo pilot. the first empty hole i came across and played around in to get a feeling for POS was

i was inside (and alone- as far as i know) for about 5 days until a nonstatic opened up to a C2 with friendly residents that even let me use their HS static to move out.

A few things have changed, such as the fuel and the timers but I found this http://www.eve-guides.com/poss/FirstPOS.php to be helpful when i first set up my first tower. gave me an idea how things actually look when you are out there in space
