Geddon Navy Issue is very good, but you need good skills to go with it

Not to kickstart a dead thread into life but i'm still at a loss on which ship is a good choice. If you take a Tengu for instance, can it be used multi purpose? Is it worth switching subsystems around or is that better left alone? (im on about doing level 4s, then going and doing some exploration, for example)

A lot of people usually just end up having multiple differently fit T3's to switch between mission running and exploration but having one and just swapping the subsystems and mods out is perfectly fine. You'll just have to keep in mind though that if you accidently lose the ship and don't have the ISK to replace it you'll be completely boned.

Then your Nightmare must be pretty badly fitted.
