Hey guys,

Me and my friend are a few weeks into Eve online and we both started out as minmitar. He's initially specing into mining first whilst i'm going into warships so i was wondering, as we go into low sec what ship should i aim for to defend him? I already own and fly a Maelstrom, so should i go for an upgrade? Maybe in a different race (preferably not)?

Also, i'll point out we plan to scan entrances to mining sites and jump out at the first sign of trouble - but it always good to be prepared!

Cheers for any thoughts on the matter.

Don't mine in low sec. You'll get caught eventually. Also there's no need, because the best value ore around at the moment is in high sec (veld/scord).

We know, we're currently mining Veld in high sec but when we move into PvP or mission running in low sec we might peel off to do some mining with spare time.

I'm still interested in some opinion on a good defensive ship.

tell him to train combat skills, since you can use those to both pvp and make money. Skillpoints in mining is basically a waste as they cannot be repurposed for anything else.

Never forget.

Don't use the Maelstrom that's for sure, a barge and a BS in a belt in losec is a lolmail waiting to happen.

A fast locking ewar ship might give him the time he needs to warp away before getting popped if 2-3 people show up, but I seriously doubt it. You certainly won't have enough time to fight them off in something like a Hurricane if they're determined and will likely loose both your ships either way.

You might go with an Osprey and a hauler both fitted with cloaks. Osprey with proper fit can give the retriever a run for it's money normally, but fitting a cloak will cut into that. However it will be a lot more agile than a barge. Use the usual security measures, setup a bunch of safe spots, keep aligned to them, watch dscan and local. The osprey also has the advantage of not looking as juicy as a barge when someone does scan it out. You might consider training for the Prowler at some point, having a cloaked hauler than can also fit a probe launcher is invaluable.
