EON Submission – A Community Story - HELP NEEDED

A while ago I posted a rough idea in the EON fan fiction thread. It was a rough idea that has been bouncing in my head for a while. The almighty Zapatero has said that if good enough it will be considered so it is now down to us.

The idea is to get a group of individual to fight a series of snapshot that take place in a massive fictional battle. The goal is to create a story that sort of shows how a battle is fought, won or lost based on individual. The whole “one man can make a difference” stuff. Anyway this is the difficult bit. Since each snapshot is written by a different writer it would be put together and submitted as a whole with each writer getting an equal share of the credit.

The post after this one will include the rough timeline of the battle, which I will edit and fill in the details as we suggest them and write the snapshots. Once we have enough that might be some specific bits needs which I will post out requests for, but basically you are on your own.

If can be any style; POV, descriptive or narrative. It can be pilots or crew or even a drone. The more variety the better. I would suggest not too much back-story and time jumping. Each snapshot should be pretty short a few paragraphs, but they should appear at least twice at different times in the battle.

I will post a few examples of what I mean, after the timeline. If possible can you post each snapshot to a separate post with single line to say where it fits and if one of multiple (e.g. 1/x) so we can ensure they are in the right order. Once we have something workable I will try to edit it into a story and submit the result to EON.

So writer lets show CCP what we as a Community can do...

Timeline

{Note this time line is subject to change as people make suggestion but basic idea is a standard 0.0 fleet fight between unnamed alliances. A straight forward slugfest}
{Each snapshot is linked here with a single line description}

• Defenders wait for battle
• Attackers prepare to jump in
• Attackers jump in and are surprised by the forces they meet
• Defenders close in for the kill, attackers run away
• Attackers second fleet jump in, it was a TARP
• Defender fleet starts to panic and split
• Just before Defenders break, backup arrives and epic fight
• Fight ends with no real winner but lots of ship lost

{ Defenders wait for battle 1/2}

The bright red light of the nebula shone through the porthole of the ship, illuminating the panel in front of her. Her fingers poised above the button to activate part of the heart of this capsuleer's ship. Her heart thumping out a war beat in her chest, like those thousand aboard the ship waiting. Needing that rush as they waiting to keep them fixed on the task at hand.
A thousands souls depending on the pilot at the heart of the ship and the instant choice they made when the expected fleet arrive. She felt a thumb in her chest and between it and the next all hell arrived.

{ Defender fleet starts to panic and split 2/2}

It was like the nebula was in the ship, the redness burning through her. Flickering in her blurred vision. She reached up her hand moving like through treacle to her forehead. Her finger wet in the hot air. The thickness seemed to fill her mind, behind it a bleating alarm detailing call to action that was pulled back inside, unable to be actioned. Why were her fingers wet? Why was it so red?

Then she was moving, floating in the air. Pulled along by unseen hands grasping beneath her armpits. Still she looked at her fingers. Still so wet and dripping. Why was it so wet? Darkness pushed her down and she fell from the grasp to the safe protection of the escape pod and the pile of dead and dying beneath her.

{Attackers second fleet jump in, it was a TARP. Frigate 1/2}

The FC sends instruction to me and I rush to obey. My mind links in automatically finding the target, locking and plotting a cause. I chose to manually override, flying beneath the carrier between us, twisting as I go to maintain my orientation. I need more speed if the plan is to work, and as quickly as I can think it, it happens. The impulses firing the microwarp drive into action, catapulting me forward so much so my mind flinches at the rush of information. The gap closes and I check and confirm my ECM.

Within seconds we are in battle with the ship. My friends around me swarm around it, pecking at it like insects until one of us pecks a little harder and the target judders to a stop. The webs are holding. Our big guns turn and fire. We stay in tight formation. I can see the scorch marks rip across the shields as the epic firepower of our fleet tears it apart. Within moments they are down and we disengage and move to the next target. I hardly notice as the ship explodes beside me. I chose years ago to limit my vision to only those things that could harm me. That was probably why I never notice the drone close range behind me.

{ Just before Defenders break, backup arrives and epic fight. Frigate 2/2}

It always happens so fast. One minute feel alive fast and free the next you are floating in space with nothing. Just the smallest feeling that you are still there. That's what it is like to lose a ship I guess, the disconnect. Never flown anything large, well not yet so that’s what the lose of a frigate is. I have done it so many times, but today is different. I try to move but can't, someone is stopping me. I can see him now and I know his name. It is a name from the past.

I was in his corp, a trusted friend. After months of work I was given access to ships beyond my ability to fly and I stole them. Each and every one. Gutted his corp and sold them to my alliance who I was recruited by from before rebirth. I know what is coming and I regret nothing. I see the missile leave his ship and head my way. I feel it hit and then I feel nothing.

I think that, considering the examples you provided, people don't have a lot of trust in you being the editor, as you appear to be someone who could use one yourself.

Thanks for your comments. If anyone can point out where editing is required I can use that knowledge, please evemail me with examples. After all if you never point out what is wrong, how do I know that it is wrong. If you or someone else would like to step in to edit the final result I would be delighted, as I was only suggesting myself to get it started.
.
The main purpose of this thread was to try to get the community to support EON which does not seem to be happening in terms of fan fiction. I guess I should go back to my silence on the forums as I am not a perfect individual. Roll

Nah, be like me.. Keep foisting your ideas on everyone, you're liable to hit a home run once in a while.. Don't let silence or apparent apathy deter you.

Nine out of ten posts may be greeted by derision and sarcasm, but, that one that is accepted may be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel's back.

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then, and it's a poor sort of memory that only works backward.

Would suggest 'intact' or something instead of 'alive'.

I think it would be better to replace 'never' with 'did not'.

Some things appear to be missing in this sentence, it does not make sense to me. But at least 'That' should be 'That is'.
Quote:

Same here. But I'm guessing it should at least end with something like '...that is what it's like to lose a frigate'.
Quote:
I can see him know
Guessing it should be 'now' instead of 'know'.

Ok I was hoping you were going to send me a evemail rather then posting it here as this thread is about the idea not my mistakes, but hey since it is here I will address it here for balance. The last three are typos and I have corrected them.

The first two, and some of the third and fourth are style choice. They are the voice I was using and I guess I will have to use the horrible " " to show that in the future.

Anyway the point of this thread was to get people interest in something different. That isn't happening and this is turning more personnel and is going off topic.

I for one think this is an interesting project. I'll submit something if I have some time to write it. Don't put it off just yet. Give it some time to get the ball rolling.

Boffles,

Do not be dissuaded from your task.

You have put a lot of time into it, and I personally applaud you for the initiative.

No doubt it WILL be a struggle. You are going to encounter resistance in the form of elitism and self-righteousness; This is a tendency in any fan fiction community.

Multiple-writer-efforts are extremely hard to synchronize for perhaps the simplest reason that writers are very selfish around their own children. Why lend their effort to someone else's project?

The collection of essays and short stories you describe however, has the potential to be much greater than the sum of its whole. Focus on that aspect and you may just get the writers you require.

I would gladly join, except that I am busy spanking my own children mercilessly. They are such vermin.

Good luck!.

[i]I have seen so much of it, that truly I know nothing of it, except that it embaces me.
