I qualified for mensa when I was a teenager. Met a few of the members, didn't care for them. It's an organization for smart people to sit around patting themselves on the back for having the right genes and being born in the right place to put them to use.

Oh absolutely, I don't deny that there's a bit of back-patting going on. But, how is that different from any other club? Let's say you're really good at driving motocross, so you join a club. In both cases you do it so you can spend time and share ideas and experiences with your peers.

Never really got into the lofty goals Mensa has for the world at large, so I can't say if they actually amount to anything worthwhile. What I do know is that among other things I really, really enjoy going to a pub with them and discuss stuff for hours. Tends to go extremely nerdy early on, but we like it that way. Can you do that without being a member? Certainly, but if you are it's virtually guaranteed.

That, and knowing that I qualify makes me feel quite smug P which almost justifies the membership fee on its own.
