The ideas is from the current World of Tanks forums, both of these would help to involve the passive forum readers in some basic interactions and in general, better experience while using the forums.

1, Polls:

The thread openers could create custom polls which are visible at the top of the first comment and can be filled out by any logged on user. These would help both the forum users and the developers to get more feedbacks faster and in a more efficient way than read often hundreds of posts.

2, Improved post rating system:

Currently you can like any posts, but there is now way to express your dislike in the same easy way. The likes are permanent and showed right below the avatar, which gives the owners of these likes false credibility, since currently there is no way to decrease this number. So instead of likes introduce simple "+" and "-" and make it possible the "like number" to go negative. This would be an objective method to rate the posts and by extension the posters themselves.

I agree, the system that Slashdot.org has implemented is very good are making the troll comments minimized so you don't have to read them.

Everyone has a set number of mod point to mod up or down other posts. Too many negative and you post is shown as minimized.
