You were all newbs before and asked those very same questions, so shuuush!! Big smile

It's not taking a **** out of people's questions. They are all valid and yes likely we had the same.

I like the idea of thread like this, shows new players what kind of questions are actually asked. Might even convince them to ask theirs.

As said: It's called your favorite noob question. Not, the dumbest noob question you've seen.

I think part of the problem with Newbs asking questions is the tutorials.

For example, the mining tutorial I believe is what ? 64 pages long? And multiply that by the number of other tutorials out there, a newb would spend all their time reading a 1,000 pages of tutorials just to figure out how to play the game. I even read a tutorial that had an introductory story to illustrate a scenario, really? Do we need an intro story to the tutorial? Big smile

So, if I had a choice to read a 64 page tutorial just to find the 5 pages of relevant info that answers my question, or post a "what ship can I use…?" question on the newb forum for more veteran players to answer in a 1 paragraph reply, which one do I choose ?

Solution:
I wouldn't mind seeing the fluff cut out of the tutorials, making them get right to the point and answer the questions. I don't need an entire paragraph of fluff just to tell me the 1 pertinent sentence I need out of it, just give me that sentence. It would probably reduce the amount of reading material significantly I would imagine.

And sometimes newbs are afraid to ask a question, like what in the world is a "Carebear" and why do I see that thrown around? Can you imagine the replies off that one alone Smile

NO Etetia.

The only stupid question, is the question you didn't ask. Period.

If you have a question, ask it. People will answer it (though sometimes you might not like the answer you get).
Don't ask and your question will never be answered and you remain clueless.

My answer would be:

Carebear = someone who totally tries to negate all PvP and does like to make ISK and do stuff that doesn't involve blowing others up.

Some people hate carebear, some don't care about them being around.

Those that hate do forget that the industry players (the typical carebears) are the ones that supply their ships and most carebear-bashers do have a carebear alt to make their money.

Play EVE the way you want to, be it Carebear or something with teeth, it's up to you

I disagree with your friend.
I find the ability to communicate, and exchange thoughts and ideas to be our strongest powers as humans.

As CCP Phantom mentioned ealier, even the questions that seems the easiest to answer, helps us improve the game.
When we time, and time again, see questions in help channels and forums about tasks that should be easy to complete, we will report it to the NPE (New Player Experience) team, who will then work on improving the tutorials, the interface, etc., to make it more user friendly.

On another note, I've decided what my favorite rookie question is:
"Can I ask a question?"

I've seen a better on in Help channel a while back.

Help channel blinked.
Loaded help channel to see if I could help.
Person asked: "Where can I get some help with questions?"
Took me 5 min to stop laughing.

If you're looking to help newbies understand stuff better, please include meta levels in the tutorials.

Every time I try to explain them to someone, I start off with "Oh boy, here we go". They're just so blatantly simple and obvious to any vet, but it's such a tough concept to explain to newbies.

I usually explain them this way:

1. There are generally only two or three types of a given module. Look for the modules labeled "(whatever module name) II" to see exactly how many and what the basic differences are.

2. Each of the general module types has 2 to 3 variables that slide up and down, usually at the cost of a penalty to another variable. The meta level increases the advantage of the variables being changed, and generally also increases the cost. For instance, most gun turrets increase the damage multiplier as the m-level goes up, at the cost of the power grid needed also going up.

3. Here is the compare tool. Here is how to get it to show you every module of a given sub-type automatically. Have fun.

That help at all?

(Though I'm with you on the "adding the compare tool to the tutorial" thing, that would be a good thing for rookie players to learn early.)

On a serious note, the first newb question I asked was during one of the industry tutorial.
I was supposed to build cap boosters and needed zydrine for the batch. I looked up on google to find what asteroids had some and ended up asking if I could find Crokite or Dark Ochre in .5 or .6 systems.
Been told to buy it off of the market, but I was disappointed, had done my homeworks, figured what asteroids I needed to mine to find Zyd, but ended up being just that easy...

"Has Hulkageddon started/ended/still running yet?"

That question is always followed by a hilarious "Miners are dirt and deserve to die anyway!" vs. "Without us, you wouldn´t have any ships to fly!" argument.

A new player in a Velator came up to me while I was visiting Couster (for old times sake) and asked me,
"Where can I buy a Titan? I wanna make it my highsec pirate ship."
I had no idea where to start.

I remember when I started, the first thing I wanted was my own fleet of Leviathans and Avatars. Now I look back and feel like slapping myself. I'm perfectly content with my battlecruiser.
