tbh I don't really see what part of EVE is supposed to be so innovative (other than the obvious engineering challenges involved).

I grant that the passive skill training system definitely was an innovation - but that aspect of the game hasn't been improved on in any significant way since 2003.

Maybe also the single-shard aspect - but then most MUDs were single-shard and the idea/advantages of single-shard MMOs are so obvious that the most likely reason that other MMOs didn't go that route were the associated engineering problems.

Most "innovative" gameplay that EVE is hailed for (unrestricted full loot pvp, sandbox, ...) is just the same-old pre-WoW MMO style...

If I were to build a "Setun 2012" would everyone call me "innovative" just because I iterated on a concept (ternary computers) that most other people forgot about?

I can't come up with one gameplay innovation that CCP contributed to the MMO world since I started playing (in summer 2008).

(Maybe the DUST<-> EVE link will be that sort of innovation - but I'll believe that when I see it; so far everything we heard through the CSM indicates that DUST will have basically no impact on the EVE universe in the form it will be initially released)

I think the MMO genre in general is one of the video game genres with the least innovation - whereas other genres developed truly new gameplay/mechanics that deviate significantly from their pre-computer versions (e.g. RTS vs strategy board games, FPS vs playing cops & robbers, ...) MMOs still are relatively faithful adaptations of pen&paper RPGs. Other than allowing for a lot more players in one game I don't really see the real "innovations".

Good article

I believe the original comment was that MMOs all fit into the same category - that is grinding, skill updating and controlling either ppl , areas and/or both. Just taking that fact by itself is a true statement. How this is done has not been innovative - and CCP/Sony has trail blazed that one.
At the end of the day - its entertainment.

I am aware of my own ignorance and have checked my emotional quotient - thanks for asking
