Without reading all the previous responses:

1.) Train your support skills
2.) Cruisers are good enough for level 2, maybe some even in a destroyer.
3.) Cruisers take more hits cause they are bigger (so easier to hit, hitting a whale with a gun is easier then hitting a fly).
4.) You likely lack the skills to properly tank a cruiser.

You know when you are ready when you think you are and try it out. Don't worry if it takes a couple of more days / weeks, you will reach it.

Personally I always used the following principle:

1.) Make an EFT / EVEHQ fit.
2.) Train all the tank skills up (doesn't have to be T2, but T2 works better)
3.) Train all the gank skills up (again, up to point you want, but T2 is better)
4.) Finally, train teh accual ship skill.

This way, being able to get into the ship means you can also use all the modules that are needed on it.
And always tank before gank, gank is good but your ship won't be of any use if you can't keep it alive.

1. Train your support skills
if you aren't sure what you want to fly or even aren't sure what career you may go into, these skills are beneficial no matter what ship you are in : Electronics, Energy Management, Mechanics, Shield Operation/Management, Hull Upgrades, Evasive Maneuvering, Navigation and there's a few more "must haves" ~ I would highly recommend devoting a couple hours to browse through ALL the skills and read the description of each in the market. It will greatly help you decide which direction to go. You can also look at the skills on evelopedia. http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Item_Database:Skills

+1 For sticking with it and finishing that L2 in your frigate. Not easy to do for a brand new player.

There's not really a lot that I can add to what the others have said. Mechanics, Hull Upgrades, skills improving your energy grid and fitting abilities. Oh and gunnery skills.

Personally the Rupture is my cruiser of choice, but I cross-trained into Minmatar ships so didn't get a chance to try it with low skills.

So now my question to all you astral superstars out there.... -When do you know when to move up in ship class and when do you have too much in back up skills?

I am just as green as you are, Tomclo. But my own rule is (when I have the prerequisite skills) "move onto the next bigger ship, when I can afford to lose it...."

That's actually a very good way of handling progression. I personally do the same, though it never hurts to train the skills to fly the "next ship" while working on getting ISK to replace it, should you lose it. Another important thing to consider is that a well-fitted Rupture is superior to a poorly fitted Hurricane. If you can't accomplish what you want, downscale to a ship you can fit properly. A common newbie mistake is thinking "My battleship is way better than my Battlecruiser". It's not better if you can't fit large guns or need good tracking (or if you can't fit a tank because of your guns taking up all the PG/CPU).

New to EVE? Want to learn? The Crimson Cartel will train you in the fields of _**your **_choice. Mainly active in EU afternoons and evenings. Contact me for more info.

One of the reasons why the Drake is so popular, you don't have to worry about orbit range, signature size, angle of approach, speed, etc.. It's basically a "warp in, target, shoot missiles" type of ship.

PVE combat in this game can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be. You could, for example, train Drones all the way up, and make a drone boat that does all the work for you. You sit back and tank the damage while your drones kill everything. (or depending on the enemy and mission, it's possible to let your drones speed tank)

Yes, the drake is quite an amazing boat with tons of merits on its side, but I would advise caution to new players aiming for it, because when fitted well, it is an incredibly forgiving boat and can easily lead to overconfidence when other boats of the same class require far more work to do the same task.
Again, it is just a word of caution and not a criticism, but EVE has a way of harshly showing the reality of the game when you grow too confident and if you can warp in, target and sit back while it blows the NPC, it's such a no-brainer that trying to fly about anything else the same way is not going to end well.
