When fitting a ship having a large number of items in your hangar can get quite annoying. To compensate for this selecting a slot set will sort your inventory to have modules appropriate to your ship in that slot on top. Anything your ship gives bonuses to will be further prioritized. If your ship already has one of a type of module others matching it will also come foreward.

All of this will only take effect while you have both your fitting and inventory open to item hangar or corperate hangars at a control tower.
