The reason for the constant correction, however, is that many players feel that since they don't actively seek ship on ship combat, they should be "saved" from it. Many players segregate the different types of ingame competition, and don't see how they are linked. It is this segregation that encourages the, "I'm entitled to have a gank-proof max-yield-fit hulk in highsec!" mentality, as they belittle their contribution to the global econimic competion and, more importantly, they don't understand how/why suicide ganking fits into that economic competition.

None of which has any bearing on the fact that we know what people mean by "PvP". Whether or not they understand why they might fall victim to it against their wishes is immaterial.

Besides which, the OP's first paragraph clearly states "PVP ship battle" making it glaringly obvious what "PvP" means in the rest of the post.

Quote:
PvP can be broadly used to describe any game, or aspect of a game, where players compete against each other.

It's never really explained how your corp-mates will help out new recruits either. EVE can be a very lonely game for those just starting out. The tutorials give you the basics, then toss you out into a very large and confusing world where you have to fend for yourself. It's pretty hard to get accepted into a lot of corporations, since they have a skill point minimum and new characters are distrusted as potential corporate spies. Once you get into a corporation though, or at least friends to give you advice and back up then EVE becomes a whole lot easier.

I think this bit here ought to be given some thought whenever developing / iterating upon the NPE.

Great post OP - closely mirrors my game path that got me to Eve just a couple months ago.

I just re-subscribed today, that's twice this year. I haven't really played since I first bought the game a good 5 or 6 years ago though. I'm hoping this time it sticks.

I keep going the solo route, maybe I need to find a corp. But I'm also trying to not do much combat (although that might change) and no mining at all, so mostly market manipulation, etc.

It's a rough world out there! But that's what makes it so special.

It' really great to hear that you finally found what you were looking for, and I think EVE is only getting better and better and the opportunities that players are creating for each other is getting better everyday!

EVE is really coming back to its own with a lot of player run events and community once again, and we're just starting a golden age in EVE.

I always thought this game was a shooter mmo. Thought it was all ground based. Idk which game I was thinking of. Nice to have this Freelancer feel though not being able to fly freely feels odd.

Trade, hauling and industry really aren't mutually exclusive from the "Vast non-stop PVP universe" you heard so much about - indeed, they're essential for it to actually work.

I think most people are going to be drawn in by that concept, and some will find their home doing the thing you described.

What a game like EvE doesn't need is people who come into it with the expectation that they can do all this and "opt out" of the central theme of EvE. Indeed, these people tend to rage like loonatics in general discussion before quitting.

"Do not touch anything unnecessarily. Beware of pretty girls in dance halls and parks who may be spies, as well as bicycles, revolvers, uniforms, arms, dead horses, and men lying on roads -- they are not there accidentally." -Soviet infantry manual,

I just started playing back in Feb of this year, and I had the same misconceptions about this game. I've always heard about the player driven market and how it's akin to spreadsheets online.

I honestly had no idea what the gameplay was like, I was envisioning people hanging around in a "Wall Street"-like office, buying and selling things lol

I started out as an industrialist, and then started training up combat skills to work my way into level 4 security missions.

The most fun I've had so far was when another player came in to a mission and can flipped the prisoners I needed to complete the mission and then cloaked. I knew exactly what they were doing, so I switched to a frigate to go see what they would do. I stole the items back from the can, but apparently while I was switching ships, so was he.. as the Tengu uncloaked I was thinking, ah @#% lol. Needless to say, I didn't last long.

My hands were shaking for almost 15 minutes after that, and it made me want more of it :)

Yeah, it certainly doesn't help that the average person hears about EVE from stories like "we sent a guy to cut the power in this one neighborhood so a Titan wouldn't be on that night" and from articles like this: .http://www.cracked.com/blog/the-7-biggest-****-moves-in-history-online-gaming/

SWTOR actually was what made me come back. WoW hasn't turned out much better as it gets ever more queing based.

I quit SWTOR just before I started playing this. I've never lost interest in a game so fast.
