Along with whats been posted above me, I am going to share a similar dilemma that hisec mission runners deal with. Please note this is outdated as the tengu has made any of this irrelevant for players with the skills. Before the tengu, the raven was an established level 4 mission runner if not the defacto mission runner. There were two different fitting philosophies that gravitated towards either a cap stable permanent shield boosting setup or a high dps setup. The high dps setup can be likened to a maximum yield setup, you can kill rats faster, thereby increasing your isk/hr, but if you failed to manage your shields or your cap properly or even pulled incorrectly and you run the risk of having your shields overwhelmed and in some cases being unfortunate enough to be scrambled and lose the ship. It's a gamble that I and others are willing to take.

While the permatank setup is safer, it takes a much longer time to kill stuff....not as long as it takes a drake, but then again a drake still has a better tank than a permatank raven. Anywho, running a max yield mining barge isn't a bad thing if you're there actively at the controls and making sure you're aligned and keeping an eye out on dscan every so often. Even if you miss em on dscan, if you see them pop up on overview an aligned ship will be gone before they are out of warp and can target. It's alot like running a high dps raven and being there to turn on your boost and cap at the right times and knowing when its time to get out.

Otherwise you take a lower yeild higher tank setup and take the chance that going afk won't attract a determined gank party. Tanking your stuff never guaranteed you'll live, its just a deterrent, just like a Viceroy mimicking a Monarch (which, fun fact: a quick google check to make sure I knew what I was talking about reveals that has been proven to be untrue, apparently Vieroy's taste just as crappy to predators as Monarchs do)

You make a valid point, good Sir or Madam.
