Why is the Rifter so huge?

  • Incursus: 82 m long axis (including "lance")
  • Merlin: 92 m long axis
  • Punisher: 67 m long axis
  • Rifter: 139 m long axis
  • Augoror: 195 m long axis (for comparison)

The Rifter used to be 70m long or so. Why the sudden near-doubling in size? Also, what is the justification behind the biggest T1 frigate (almost destroyer or cruiser size) also being the fastest and most agile one? Was consideration given to how turrets would fit on it? They look downright tiny now.

rifter pilots typically need the extra space for their gigantic balls

While I don't disagree, having a Rifter (or even better, a Wolf) bristling with guns was one of the best parts of flying the ship.

Actually, the rifter is not the fastest or most agile t1 frigate. The slasher is.

Sigh...

The fastest/most agile out of the examples I listed, foo'. Semantics notwithstanding, the Rifter's new size doesn't make sense.

To speak on this, look at the Freki (is seeded too) you'll see the difference..

60m for the Freki and 139 for all other rifter variants...

I like the new looks - I have both the wolf and Jaguar in the hangar.

I love the ships but:

1. the weapons on them DO look a tad "tiny" now, they used to be "HUGE" but I think perhaps we need some middle ground or shrink the ship down a bit - say about mid between now and what it used to be...

2. THE WOLFs top mounts are INSIDE the model, not good... CCP you need to put them do they are on the outside of the skin...LOL...or perhaps they are secret weapons!!!...

Yeah, I was wondering what was up with this myself. I used to rather not like Minmatar at all, but now that they've got some nifty new textures and such, and Thukker ships look absolutely amazing, I'm definitely thinking I'm going to be flying Jags alot more than I did before. The thing that I did like about the Rifter and it's variants though was the size of the guns compared to the size of the rest of the ship; it just looked balanced to me. Now the Rifter almost looks overinflated, almost, and the guns are far, far too small. I can understand this on a battleship, like Rokh or Maelstrom, having tiny guns compared to the rest of the thing, but the Rifter actually did have some charm as a 60 meter long frigate.

If you compare the ship sizes visually the new size makes much more sense than the old one (at least to me). I didn't really compare them next to each other before the change but this is what they look line now:

These ships were all placed very close to each other so perspective effects should be minimal.

If the rifter was half that size before that's a little ridiculous. It's fragile structure now makes it look smaller than it actually is, putting it in line with the other frigates. Of course the T2 and faction variants have to be adapted as well.

The Mach is the biggest BS in the game and also the fastest/most agile.

I guess it's a Minmatar thang..

Mach is an Angel ship... designed by who-knows-who and cannot be directly compared to Minmatar ships.

Tbh Macharial, Cynabal and Dramiel fly like a dream which is part of their popularity. Who doesn't like to fly battleships behaving like a battlecrusier and flying crusiers behaving like frigates :-)

The problem with small projectile guns is, that the turret base is freaking huge. The guns on my Wolf just look horrible.
And it was far easier to just scale up the Rifter than to redo all the guns.

But no worries, Rifter-pilots, if i interpret the wall in the Rookie-ship video correctly, the Rifter is due for redesign.

either way frigate sizes are not coherent. at least the ones given in the preview.
rifter hulls are just too big now.
a compromise between old and now would be ok, i guess.

Now it's about the size of merlin, it's fine. It was almost too small before. plus it's not a big deal, it's still a rifter. maybe a bit shorter, like 100m, but still it looks right next to other frigates.
