Maelstrom fit (what is Shield tanking?!)

All right, I moved up from an Armor tanked Hurricane to a Maelstrom. Now, considering it's bonus I would assume it is Shield tanked. Unfortunately, I've no clue how to fit a ship for active Shield tank because I've never flown it. Also, will it fit eight 1400's or do you have to put 1200's?

Looked @ Battleclinic, but didn't really find any fitting that inspiring.

Fit shield booster, that is minimum you need.

More advanced fits can use shield boost amplifiers.

Then you have to decide if you want to run shield booster full time and be cap stable, or pulse it as needed. I think most people pulse it. With faction mods you can probably run it full time and be cap stable.

You could get Cyclone and run it, learn the shield booster fits on it. Cyclone has one ship bonus to guns, second ship bonus to the shield booster.

load a second set of cap boosters into your cargo but you really shouldn't need them, you do a ton of damage fast so half your tank is gank,

if you are looking for a more traditional tank fit, i also haven't found anything inspiring.

Wouldn't Auto-cannons be quite bad on a Maelstrom? I run 'em on my Hurricane, which is fast and nimble enough to get in range and stay in range. From what I've gathered from my test flights of my Maelstrom, it is uncharacteristically slow and cumbersome for a Minmatar ship.

Yes but with Tracking Enhancers 800mm's punch out to about 45km Falloff with T1 Ammo.

I've tried them, not a big fan but it works.

Cap stable with AB off. CPU is very tight, you can drop the cap power relays if you are comfortable with pulsing a cap unstable tank. When going this way i will swap the boost amp out for a third (meta) hardener to free up more cpu and replace cap relays with another gyro II and a nano. Designed for clearing sanctums safely on the quick and does not disappoint. Arty allows you to stay aligned while murdering everything. Recommend no more than 2 guns per group. Nice cheap t2 and meta fitting doesn't sting too much to lose one.

I'd go with an 800mm ac setup for 'bearing in safe space. As for pvp fits well its not a solo boat imo so the fit would depend on your role in gang, but then why aren't you in a tornado? I'd say you could rig up a decent bait ship with those new shield injectors though...

When you start flying the Mael, use 1200s. They track way better than 1400s. When your skills are all up, switch to 800s. Mael really shines with ACs.

Also, Heavy Cap Booster is a must. This means no CCCS are needed. Try this fit.

The X-Large Ancillary Shield Boosters can make a /huge/ difference to this ship. sure, there's a minute or so where you can't boost. But you've got a pretty good ship. I've been meaning to try it out.

My regular mission fit is 8x 1200mms (T2 or meta 4), an XL booster, 2x primary hardener. 2x secondary hardener. AB, 2x tracking enhancers, 2x gyro and a DC2

I could probably toss the DC2, but it's nostalgic ;).

The 1200's will reach out to max targeting range, within optimal + 1 falloff. I keep a Sebo around, when I want to take it further.

Assuming a mission fit, anyone telling you to fit one of those ancillary shield boosters is an idiot. The cost to run one of those shield boosters is silly in a PVE situation and it's completely unneeded anyway.

Here's a list of differences between shield and armor tanking

- shield boosters cycle faster than armor reppers
- shield booster gives shield at the beginning of the cycle, armor rep gives at the end
- you can fit a shield boost amp to help your boosted amount, armor has rigs for that
- shield gets an active omni resists (invul), armor gets that new crappy shifting hardener
- damage control helps less on shield than on armor, but as it uses a low slot it's actually "better" for shield
- shield uses midslots leaving open low for damage mods and TEs
- PVE prefers shield tanking in most cases

Here's a maelstrom fit that makes sense assuming you do lvl 4 missions against Angels. If you want to spend some cash get faction gyros but the fit will also do fine when translated to named.

Another great thing about the Mael is that when you have skilled up to it well, you are ready to fly a Mach.

A Cap Booster 400 cost around 5k, even if you use up a full cargohold of them it's only 200k. If it's the best fit or not can be discussed but calling the cost silly is just silly.

It'll take a while to use up to that 150+ mill for The CN X-large booster ;)

I'd agree that it's pretty much hideously over tanking the ship, but there are some situations where it can come in handy. (some of the Epic Arc Missions can have hellacious incoming DPS)

Reasons to use the shield booster,
it frees up a midslot,
gives a better rep amount then the caldari navy x-l
doesnt eat other cap, so you wont cap out and turn off your hardners.
lets you fit sexy sebo and tc into mids

reasons not to use the ancillary cap booster
really only used with cap boosters, 400's
capless guns really means you have cap to spare.
cheaper

really its up to you, id say try both as the fittings arent that different in terms of rigs, which are also to taste and decide which is easier and cheaper to run

Perhaps I should mention that my fitting budget after the ship purchase is roughly 100mil ISK.

Its the hassle of moving them and aso the ancillery is even more bursty then using your own capacitor sparingly.

Generally, if you do it right, you only need the cap booster in dire situations because if you ride the cap recharge wave properly you can get away with almost never needing those booster 800s charges. With an Ancil booster using a 5k costing booster 400 every 4 seconds it quickly starts to add up for no reason whatsoever. Yes it frees up a midslot which is very handy but on the downside you spend a lot more per mission for no real gains and would you run into trouble as you're reloading then you're going to have some hairy moments.

It doesn't make sense in a PVE situation.

Just grab a BPO and make them yourself with some salvage. You don't need perfect skills to do it, industry 1 is all and you need If you salvage you also get them from the loot drops.

Dont use the ancil booster for pve. 60 second reload time. That means no tank for 60 seconds. Unless you're a very, very experienced mission runner you're going to die with that.

Cap boosters are nice and all but you don't need them. Shell out for the spendy bits and just move them wholesale to your Mach or Vargur when the time comes. Practice bursting the booster. If you feel you're having issues tanking you can always swap out one TC for a heavy cap booster but in general you won't need it.
