Confirming that learning how to survive low in a shiny T3 is win.

Each to their own. T3s are just about as safe as you get in low sec... but yeah, losing them kinda sucks. At least you won't forget the lesson anytime soon.

To be fair, I guess I started exploring in an Ishtar/covops combo. I learned a thing or two that way -- but one of the things I learned is that a truly nomadic setup is unambiguously better for the job. And that means a T3.

If you're not in it for the combat sites a force Recon is a pretty good bet though. Pilgrim is best for this though and unless things have changed lately Salpad has zero Amarr skills. An Arazu might manage to scare off the casual onlooker though...

Just saying, if you are not used to lowsec, a less expensive ship is better for the first time. To use me as an example, my first lowsec experience ended in pirates honoring their ransom. It also taught me that scan probes are not checked in your overview by default...Shocked

Quick advice:

Pick a Sovereignty and pick a ship with natural resists to the rats there. Beef resists with specific hardeners.

Exploration is all about speed, speed, speed. Highsec exploration is extremely competitive for the combat sites. Radar sites are your bread & butter. Mag sites are meh but you can pick up Intact Armor Plates woth 18m each (rare but it happens).

Combat plexes can be hugely profitable but be prepared for a long hard slog on occasion. This forum is *full* of whiney threads about explorers getting no decent drops for 'weeks on end'.

Combat plexes are about doing the absolute minimum necessary to get the fat loot. Kill triggers, move on, kill Overseer, loot & gogo. Or if your tank is not good enough, kill Overseer, bookmark wreck, warp out, warp back in 3 minutes (site will have despawned).

Here's a good fit for an Ishtar in Gallente (or Caldari) High/lowsec:

[Ishtar, Allround explo]
Medium Armor Repairer II
Shadow Serpentis Armor Kinetic Hardener
Shadow Serpentis Armor Thermic Hardener
Shadow Serpentis Armor Thermic Hardener
Capacitor Power Relay II

Experimental 10MN MicroWarpdrive I
10MN Afterburner II
Codebreaker I
Analyzer I
Eutectic Capacitor Charge Array

Prototype Cloaking Device I
Drone Link Augmentor I
Core Probe Launcher I, Sisters Core Scanner Probe I
Salvager I
[empty high slot]

Medium Sentry Damage Augmentor I
Medium Sentry Damage Augmentor I

Garde II x5
Warden II x5
Hammerhead II x5
Hobgoblin II x5
Vespa EC-600 x5

(Quick nod to Hungry Eyes..)

If your skills aren't up to fitting this, drop a rig off for more CPU.

You can drop the DLA in the high for 3 electron blasters or somesuch. Also read Hungry's thread here.

If not T3, then drone boats are ideal for exploration since your dps comes from a bay and you can use free slots for utilities.

You *will* be competing against mostly T3 explorers dual-boxing. But be patient and you will get lucky.

Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
