Is this not a sandbox where people are free to play the game mechanics as they see fit?

That would include suicide gankers, High Sec Wardercs, can flippers/ninja salvagers and whoever else you're probably labeling as "griefers". they are all playing "the game mechanics as they see fit."

Please be respectful in your answers and explain this to me, as a newb to the game.

Please take the time to read the forums and maybe some of the better blogs to get your answers, instead of thinking your special and require a personal explanation.

People don't hate carebears per se but they do hate people that log only when it's safe and convenient for them.
In the case of living in null sec this means people who; never ever visit your sovereignty systems in null, just suddenly happen to have lots of urgent things to do every time there's a need for PvP- or CTA-fleet to be formed and spend all of their time ratting/mining in high sec.
Second useless bear case are people who do industry in null but have absolute zero interest on defending or doing anything related to PvP by them selves, this usually includes miners who think that because they mine you should be their slave and/or guardian but absolutely refuse to hand over any isk / ore / ships for ship replacement programs and other alliance / corp related activities.

In other words those people are good for nothing but bloating the numbers and extra baggage to haul along.
So people don't hate carebears they hate lazy mofo's who only do things for themselves, that 90% of EVE's PvE content happens to fit on that category is just icing on the cake.
