Repair my faction standing - Dummy questions.

Ok,

I have read the faction repair thread and the relevant links and still having issues.

Due to some past time FW etc I have terrible standing with Gellente.
I never actually done the sisters of eve arc so decided to do it, I got jumped by Gellente police on my way there as it resides in Gellente space.

Now, I want to repair my standing, so I have purchased and currently training Diplomacy and Fast Talk and want to try and increase my standing.
I started warping around the belts in Arnon to find some rats to kill and got jumped by Gellente police again and just got out in one piece.

Now, stupid question... But how am I meant to start repairing my standing if I cant rat properly?
And if that's the wrong starting point what is the right one, as of yet I cant do the Gellente tutorial missions due to my standing so I just need enough standing to start them.
