What is the best AFK mission ship?

I am looking for a ship that has the best balance between AFK permatank and max damage.

I tried the Golem, but it is definitely not me style. Too much shield management even with all skills at V. Plus it sucks at killing anything small even with faction target painters.

I trained a Tengu, but this ship requires very expensive Gist shield to be able to permatank. It can still permatank with a cheap shield, but then damage needs to be sacrificed, and that is not acceptable.

So I decided to look at a rattlesnake, but it seems like a Machariel is MUCH better in every way, except I am not sure if a Mach can just sit in a mission pocket and tank EVERYTHING. Is there any issues like cap injecting, cycling shield or anything like that?

The nightmare looks nice, but I heard it got worse in rescent years...

No, the Mach can't sit still and tank on the same level of RS can. But then the RS is also stuck in one spot and has to sit still and tank. No sane Mach fit will permatank either. Mine gets just under 2 minutes of cap with everything going all out and I've yet to have run out of cap. So, yeah, I guess flying one is actually quite an active endeavor, but it sure completes missions quickly.

Not sure where you got that. The Phantasm got knocked down a bit but there haven't been any significant changes to the NM.

How "semi" are we talking here? Chances are the answer really is either RS or some other drone ship. None of them are going to compete with the top tier of mission runners, but the top tier require, you know, actual input to complete missions effectively. That's your tradeoff.

Don't give up the Tengu too fast, there is no better ship for AFK missions right now. Unless you want to try something with drones, but this will be difficult in most missions because of new waves incoming and killing your drones while you're AFK (never used drone ships for that purpose myself though).
A Nighthawk might work too, but has less DPS (since you won't use its drones).

When using the Tengu, you can easily set up an active t2-only cap-stable permatank that tanks almost anything level 4s can offer while having 6 launcher/3 BCU and max damage that you can do with FOFs. It even worked with t2 modules and only 3 medium tanking slots for most missions (used 3 gravimetric boosters back then for probe-immune AFK mission-running in 0.0). You can also use an AB next to your tank and orbit a can or wreck at 600-700 m/s for extra safety, with CC-rigs that can be cap-stable as well, without expensive modules (and you don't have to change ships for speed missions like Recon 1-3).

AFK missions?

Dominix is really good. The dual LAR setup is pretty stout. Grab aggro, kick sentries out, orbit them then go make a sandwich.

The Gila is what I use, with same principle. Ishtar can be setup the same way. Rattlesnake is king of AFK mission runners though. Load FOF cruises, kick sentries out and walk away. Sure stuff has more DPS, but I don't think anything can out tank a rattlesnake. And if your going to afk missions, tank comes way ahead of gank. The rattlesnake with an all T2 setup can get tank in the 2.5k dps range. I'd recommend tech 2 sentry's though and some faction cruise launchers.

You need to trade fast mission completion for AFK viability I'm afraid. A Mach will rip through missions easily but you need to be paying attention, if a Tengu gets webbed then it's tank can melt if you've aggroed the whole room.

For true AFK missioning you can't really get around needing a drone boat. A dual rep Dominix is the less expensive choice, a passive Rattlesnake the more expensive one with the bonus that any occasional neuting that can occur in some lvl 4's won't kill your tank.

Just aggro the room, let your drones loose and come back later. If you want to have some input, you can use sentries to thin the herd a bit before switching to the other drones and fire cruise missiles at any battleships on the grid. It's still worth checking the mission out on Eve survival, because any triggered spawns will aggro your drones and destroy them if you're not there to reel them in and gain aggro yourself before letting them go again.

If by AFK though you just mean switch on the repper and hardeners then forget about them while you do the mission actively, then you can get away with that on a lot of battleships, you just need to play around in EFT to get a cap stable fit with a decent tank. You'll not get as efficient a damage dealer, or probably as hefty a burst tank as you would by pulsing the repper/booster and replacing cap mods/rigs with more useful ones though.

You basically have 3* options.

Dominix*, Gila, and Rattlesnake.

Cheap, Medium, Expensive.

You can probably outfit a Dominix to AFK missions for about 50-60mil.

The Gila costs about 150mil for the hull alone, and you probably should fit something faction or officer on it, too.

A Rattlesnake is about 700mil, and you should definitely put some T2 rigs on it, which will set you back a quite a bit of isk. With that said, you can pile a TON of tank onto one of these with minimal effort.

*You have a 4th option of choosing a Navy issue Dominix, but you probably won't do any more afk damage using one. Sentry Drone damage comes from rigs and the Navy Domi has fewer calibration than a regular Dominix.

Personally I use a Gila with this setup to AFK missions:

[Gila, L4s]
Shield Power Relay II
Shield Power Relay II
Shield Power Relay II
Shield Power Relay II

Large Shield Extender II
Large Shield Extender II
Domination Heat Dissipation Field
Kinetic Deflection Amplifier II
Y-S8 Hydrocarbon I Afterburners
Drone Navigation Computer I

'Arbalest' Assault Missile Launcher, Sabretooth Light Missile
'Arbalest' Assault Missile Launcher, Sabretooth Light Missile
'Arbalest' Assault Missile Launcher, Sabretooth Light Missile
Drone Link Augmentor I
[empty high slot]

Medium Core Defence Field Purger I
Medium Core Defence Field Purger I
Medium Core Defence Field Purger I

Warrior II x5
Valkyrie II x5
Berserker II x5
Hobgoblin II x5
Hammerhead II x5
Ogre II x5

Swap the Domination Amplifier and Passive Resistance Amp with mission specific resists, and you can afk most any mission with this beast, and it isn't that expensive.

Rattlesnake if you have good drone skill and good knowledge of mission, i often solo liv 4 afk without problem
