To start, this is not really a serious topic. It's more of a "some guys and I were talking about what to primary and why and then someone had a random moment of insanity." Now I want to hear the communitys' thoughts on either the brilliance or "special-ness" of the idea.

It goes something like this:

In a small to medium-sized engagement, winning or losing is often decided by ships being called as primary and everyone focusing fire on it (even more so when dealing with enemy logistics).
Targets are called out using two things:

1. Ship type.
2. Name of the pilot.

Here's where the insanity comes in.

"But... what if two guys have more or less the same name and are flying the same ship?"

This got some of us thinking...

If a bunch of people went through the effort of making a bunch of characters with a series of "10101011" names (or something equally hideous to call out) and all the pilots trained to fly the same ship using the same tactics.... how would the enemy know who to focus fire against?

The concept can be seen in the animal kingdom where Zebras run in large herds, their stripes effectively making them individually indistinguishable from each other unless one gets separated.

Thoughts?

wow, you late night guys are really special!

bringing a dumb question to the forums and having the obvious answer given to you by an alliance mate. This is why there is a thing called alliance chat, to save yourself looking stupid in public.

Could work, but only if you assume that broadcast target is too slow for most engagements (Which i agree, esepcially if you need to do it every single time).

I see two interesting adaptations to this.
1. instead of just having identical ships named the same, have ships named to a ship they arent. While this isnt going to fool people, its sure to cause just that second or two of confusion.
2. If you get good at this it could be really interesting: Renaming your ships to the enemy fleets'. You would have to have a good scout, and enough time to change names quickly. But i suppose that if they have overview setup correctly it wouldnt matter. Might freak someone out a little though

This is what I am thinking.

In small engagement broadcasting would work... but once you get into 15+ sized engagements it becomes a bit difficult... as my experience has been that very few people find it easy to locate that little "broadcast" highlight in the midst of all the chaos... even on the overview.

edit: the broadcasting highlight also disappears after a few seconds... which means you have to keep rebroadcasting it over and over again... making it a tedious affair.

It was never really a serious thought beyond, "yeah... that'd be pretty funny/cool." I just wanted to share and publicly laugh at the thought. Smile

You can ctrl-click the broadcast in the fleet window; you don't need to hunt for it.

Hitting the broadcast hotkey is faster than reading someone's gibberish name.
Ctrl+clicking a broadcast is faster than trying to find that name between another 100 people in your overview.

The only reason FCs call out names is to confirm a broadcast, as potentially anyone can broadcast anything and you wouldn't know from the broadcast window.

I guess fc could also say set overview to alphabetical and start from the top???

Who has ship names on their overview? Is that even an option?

stupid idea.. stupid stupid .. Twisted

there are also tags, wich you can use to target also secondarys wich wont work with only the broadcast.
but tags do need a bit longer to select.

i came about a nearly same idea as i saw chinese(or somethink like this) and arabic letters on shipnames. no idea if it works with characternames too

Given the number of times I've seen people completely miss a target broadcast, it could be effective enough to make a difference in the fight. Of course the investment required makes it a bit prohibitive...

That's why you use broadcast history and contro;+click from there, save your overview for helping maintain situational awareness.

TL;DR replies.

Did anybody mention broadcast history? in a fleet fight with enough people to confuse the members, if you dont have fleet broadcast history up, you're either a Goon, or ********.
