I understand how you feel... I felt that way when I started to. But the above posts are correct, if you want to do PVP you need to get over the fear of dying. Remind your self it's a game and get out and take risks.

PVP is the best part of EVE, the excitement and thrills of fights are unmatched by any other game.

Ive been following this guy and he has a **** load of good advice on his website. once i decided i didnt care about dying i got out into nullsec and have started having alot more fun. You will burn out from boredom if you dont explore and go fighting like you have a pair. Its fine if you want to stay in high sec and be safe, but ill tell you when you get that first rush of your first engagement and you pop becuase your camera is zoomed all the way in , you forgot to start your damage control and never even locked the guy shooting you, you'll understand the attraction. As you get into more engaugements youll start to develop your cool and learn a mechanical set of steps to take for a given situation. Im 6 months in and only really started getting out there in the past 2 months.

CHECK THESE OUT

DOTLAN Great site for maps you can keep up on a second monitor if your have dual monitor capability. Good for deciding quickly which gate you want to go to next without having to bring up the starmap (thats if your free roaming and have not already plotted a roam on your autopilot)

EVE CENTRAL Place where you can view any type of module, commodity, ship ETC to compare the different prices from region to region. Your market button will only show the region your physically in so just short of flipping between alt characters that you plant in Jita, Amarr, Dodixie....the trade hubs, this is the best option for searching out that buy low, sell high senario to make isk.

EVELOPEDIA Main reference page. You can find most things in here if you have questions of what something is.

LOADOUTS You will want to get into this and check out the loadouts others have posted so you can get a good idea of how you want to fit a ship. By no means are the loadouts on here the best as a rule, but they are a good starting point and more times than not you will find a fitting for your ship that you can use.

KILLBOARD You can check out other pilots you meet in EvE. I would highly recommend this step before engaging someone. Check out the person and see his kill/loss rations. Also check his "employment history" when you bring up his profile. The first entry at the bottom will show his start date. Normally if you see someone whose a 2007 character they will have the skills and the experience to kick your ass. THIS IS NOT ALWAYS THE CASE but it is a good thing to consider. My kill/loss record is not so good right now because im learning and dont care but as i go i get better and better.

These are some of the things ive learned and so far im having a good time.

Welcome to Eve. Great game where time invested is never wasted since skills are always being trained, or should be.

The path I've taken, I've got two accounts, one for mining and pvp, and the other for pve and hauling. While i haven't yet gotten to the extremes of one aspect of the game, I've found that dabbling in them all keeps things really fresh. Yes, my approach takes a long time to master anything, but I feel like i'm seeing as much as I can.

Here is a great example of how you make yourself a big target in high-sec. *Yes, that is me in my early game days*

Damn a PLEX was worth almost 2B back then!!! Sad its only 1/5 that now.

Just want to point out that i am new as well and I've had nothing but great training. The community in this game is seriously one of the best. I too love to pvp and it's a whooooole 'nother level here. What I've learned is that pvp becomes a lot more fun when you find a ship you are GOOD IN. Mess around with t1 frigates and head down to low sec ( sysyems with secruity statuses BELOW .5). Of course you want to finish the tutorial missions first but after that seriously look into player corporations. The game gets better along the way. Always train and try to get as much ISK as you can cuz no matter what you WILL die here lol.

I'm amazed no one has trolled this yet :P

These are 5 rules that were given to me when I started the game about 2 years ago.

Rule 1.
Never, never, NEVER, EVER trust anyone in Goon. For any reason. Ever. NO REALLY, EVER. I'm sure there are some decent people there but dealing with them is similar to playing Russian Roulette with 5 barrels loaded.

Rule 2.
If its in Jita local, it's a scam.

Rule 3.
Dont fly what you cant afford to lose. ( as someone said earlier. Dont fly what you cant afford to lose repeatedly.)

Rule 4.
You are never really safe if you aren't docked.

Rule 5.
If your going down, take someone with you.

Eve uni and Red Vs Blue are also great places to learn. Look them up.

Cael,
I see a LOT of very excellent advice here, and I'm hoping you'll put at least some of it to good use. You'll find that Eve really isn't a very nice place at times, which is just the way it is....but....you will meet sooooo many wonderful people here, and they are always willing to help out a new player. I've been playing for many years and I too was afraid to lose my first ship, but once it happened, all those feeling just evaporated and I was off like a shot...lol. Someone said to pick a path and go for it, find something you really like to do, but also don't be afraid to branch out. By continuing to read the forums and checking other sites that have been provided in others posts to you, you'll be able to figure out a way to make ISK that appeals to you, fit a couple backup ships and just have fun.
One last point and I'm outta here, don't let the trolls or the asshats ingame get you down, just ignore them and go on....we ALL were 'noobs' at one point !! =)
Good luck to you and I do hope you find Eve as enjoyable as myself and so many others do. Blink

1. If you can keep your head while those around you are losing theirs, you may have misjudged the situation.
2. Remember: pillage, THEN burn.
3. The enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy, no more, no less.
4. When the going gets tough, the tough call for titans.
5. There is no "overkill". There is only "open fire" and "reload".
6. Anything worth fighting for is worth fighting dirty for.
7. If your attack is going really well, it's an ambush.
8. Try to look unimportant; the enemy may be low on ammo and not want to waste it shooting you.
9. When in doubt, F1-F8.
10. For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.
11. Fair fights don't exist. There's always an edge. If you don't have it you probably think its a fair fight,

Helpful advice for eve.

That's me, and look again, it was 4 PLEX, means 500mil each.

Still don't care that I lost that, it was a hell of a learning experience.

And WOW, you made it to the log in screen. Now that is one hell of an EVE entrance for a new player.

I have played eve since 2004 I have played as a - 10 security risk player and now I am back to being a + 5 one thing I have learned in this game if you play smart you wont loose to much that you can not go on, the thing is if you become to worried about wether you are going to die in a game it is time to stop playing, I recommend finding friends you can depend on to help you build back up if every thing goes wrong and remember it is just a game peace friend. Take it slow and make friends. Flying with friends is what makes this game enjoyable. You will learn the odds and ends through experiencing the game with people you like playing with.

When you get comfortable with the game enough to step out of your comfort zone a little check out EvE University.

If you find that living dangerously in low sec/ null is more to your liking check out Sniggwaffe. > Join Sniggwaffe (in game channel).

All of the above advise is good...albeit a bit redundent. It honestly has been a long time since i experianced a spark of excitement in a fight but i do remember it...The simple reality is you will loose ships in this game, especially in the begining. You may not even loose it to PVP, you may loose it to NPC's. The trick is not to get upset over loosing a ship...you should be upset over not killing your oponent.
Tears are the greatest thing you can collect in eve. There is nothing more pleasurable then listening to the barrage of excuses on why someone failed. You have gotten pretty much all the advise that anyone could ever want when it comes to how to start PVPing in EVE, but keep in mind 2 simple things... 1) Dieing means nothingin eve other then a loss of some pixels and tbh we suicide gank all the time...2) Tears are always worth the loss ALWAYS

So I've played a couple MMO's before mainly WoW. (Also SW tor and Rift) I've always read about how crazy Eve is and all that even my own father got into the game and I remember him telling me all these crazy stories. Like I said I was playing WoW so I wasn't interested.
Anyways, Eve is on sale on Steme for 7 dollars so I decided what the heck I'll try it. So I'm in the first hour or two in the game and I just cruise by a huge burning planet and my jaw drops. I immediately turn to my gf who's playing my Diablo account while I play Eve and have to show her. It looks gorgeous!
So I keep playing and playing slowly learning things about the game. How to do this or that and I do my first probe scan thing. When I finally got it down it felt awesome! I first looked on youtube then got some help from the incredible community.Which as you can tell WoW doesn't have. Anyways on to my point. Is there a safe way to play this game? I'm literally terrified now of dying. Which is weird to me since I absolutely love PvP but this game is on a whole new level. So guys, what tips or stories do you have about when you first started playing?

Get out while you can. If you are brave enough however, be prepared for a game full of scammers, griefers, and others with bad intentions just waiting for a day one noob to take advantage of.

Oh and get out there and lose rifters. Repeatedly. Dying is the best way to learn PvP in EvE Online.

[Rifter, t1 cheap]
Gyrostabilizer I
200mm Reinforced Rolled Tungsten Plates I
Small Armor Repairer I

Warp Scrambler I
Stasis Webifier I
1MN Afterburner I

200mm AutoCannon I, EMP S
200mm AutoCannon I, EMP S
200mm AutoCannon I, EMP S
Rocket Launcher I, Mjolnir Rocket

[empty rig slot]
[empty rig slot]
[empty rig slot]

Skill books you will need (might already have them so check):
Minmatar Frigate III
Spaceship Command I
Small Projectile Turret I
Gunnery I
Missile Launcher Operation I
Afterburner I
Propulsion Jamming I
Repair Systems I
Mechanics I
Hull Upgrades II
Weapon Upgrades I

Easily trainable in less than a day. Good luck and go out there and kill things! Believe me you will love PvP. The hard part is starting. Once you feel the adrenaline of battle you'll never look back :)

Take a new player ship to a high population, low sec system. Undock it and watch it explode. Roam the belts, explore the nearby systems, watch it explode, alot.

Do this in many systems, do it all before you break that 900K SP mark.
Set medical clone in low sec, in systems near where you want to launch from.

The hardest part of EVE is letting go of the idea you can win. Once you do, you embrace the idea of getting better at EVE. From there it becomes more than losing noob ships but it must start with losing ships. You can't damage control if you don't understand the damage done. Losing ships isn't as severe as you think.

+1 Look into RvB or Eve University are great ways to learn how to pvp/ pve

Dont fly ships bigger than you should. Master a rifter before going to a cruiser ect. A good way to judge is if you dont have a full t2 fit then wait. You would be amazed what a can be done in a t1 frig in the right setting.

Learn to choose your fights very carefully. This is a game were u loose or run more times than you win no matter what.

Learn that this is a game of risk assessment. Learn when to risk a cheap ship for the chance of a big kill. Some of my biggest victories ended in my victims friends killing me. So long as you come out ahead in points or isk your winning. Just like in real fights even the winner comes out with some losses.

Never fly what you cant aford to loose.

When you first start out plex and then dont go crazy. 1 plex should keep you in t2 fit rfters for a while.

Always message the guy who kills you and ask for tips. some of my best friends in game or best tips i ever got were from someone who just killed me.

OP - You will die, it's just part of what makes this game exiting. Don't worry about it. Just don't quit, keep going. EVE online is awesome! No game like it. If you like pvp, look into the Red versus Blue (RvB) EVE alliance or Faction Warfare (FW). Also, DUST 514 is coming (a FPS kind of connected to/part of our EVE universe in Beta now) and is going to also be awesome! You lucked into a great time to become part of the win that is EVE online! EVE is incredibly harsh but SO much fun! Just don't quit. Welcome!

When i first brought my best mate into the game all those years back ..... i gave him the oppertunity to earn some isk with a small mining outfit i'd set up. I lent him an imicus and he worked hard mining ores untill he had enough to buy his own imicus. I was working from a different race cruiser (this was way before mining barges) .... when i thought he was well on the road to surviving on his own (still his first day) I suggested that we swap ships so that he could have a look at the ship I was in, knowing full well that he couldnt fly my ship. We both ejected and i boarded his ship whilst he tried to board mine and failed.
I set the self destruct on his ship and ejected and got back into mine and he did the same ... Twisted I then told him that id set the self destruct and that he had to cancel it by selecting it twice more Twisted in the confusion ... his ship blew up and i podded him...
That lesson was "trust no-one" Pirate
