On a larger picture, I am forced to ignore all the fudged numbers about EVE subs and perfect record of growth.

Around 18 months ago, several MMO websites put EVE in the 'big league' because it had broke a 500K subscription mark but now you see people talking about EVE having 300K "And growing".

That's a 40% decline in top numbers so someone is selling snake oil.

The actual numbers that CCP gave to a site called MMOData are that Eve subs peaked at 370,000 last summer and fell to 340,000 in December. In April, the number of subs was back up to 361,000. Any numbers over 400,000 includes trial accounts and accounts in China playing on the Serenity server. If you listen carefully you will hear CCP say "players" and not "subscriptions."

As for the number of players online, according to Chribba's Eve-Offline site, the average number of accounts logged in Sunday, 20 May was 29,976. The average number logged in on Sunday, 27 May was 31,054, a 3.6% increase. I'll be interested to see what the numbers are on a Sunday when Hulkageddon is not running.

You also have to factor in that a lot of bots still weren't working quite right on Sunday. But unless Team Game of Drones does something funky when fixing the universal inventory, I think the bots will be fixed and up and running again Ugh

For the record

…also, the geographical distribution of players throughout the years can be found in the CSM voting results devblogs (about half-way down the page, there is “Turnout by country was as follows” and a table that includes the “Subscription %” heading).

Let me start by saying, I don't like the new UI system. However, I have no problem trying to adapt. I would not say that the new inventory system breaks my game play for doing any normal things.

With mining, however, the system is broken. Period. Anyone who is serious about mining, is running a lot of accounts. Otherwise, why not just rat? I can make 150mill ratting fairly easily. (yes, using multiple accounts). The way that mining out does that - is by running a large number of accounts.

I could mine with no difficulties/problems, pre patch, with 7-8 accounts running at once. Now, even with just 7 online (5 miners, 1 rorq, 1 tank), the system is laggy.

It's not about adapting. Make the inventory system 'instant' (like the old system), and fix pos's (which they are supposed to), I can deal with trying to adapt. But having to adapt around lag should not be acceptable.

Am I going to threaten to cancel my subscriptions? No. The truth is - if they don't make it more acceptable for mining somehow, I will likely unsub the extra accounts that just mine. (and then rat to pay for my PvP). I'm hoping they figure this out though.

That was interesting, thanks for the links, Tippia.
I would be interested in seeing a graph of the same format as the one you linked, but a seasonal graph. I'm just curious as to how the daily numbers are affected during winter and during summer, northern and southern hemispheres.

I haven't updated them in a while, but I have this one — the eve-offline daily averages graph cleaned up and colour-coded (less noise, each season is clearly marked) — and this one, showing the difference in weekly and monthly averages compared to the preceding year.

Except Memorial day is a holiday that is celebrated outside. Many of us have family and friends and lives outside of Eve, you may not but many of us do. I got better **** to do than internet space ships when its 85 and sunny. I was not on during the weekend, and I also just sub'ed a new account. Numbers are always deceptive, they can be manipulated to say what you want. I love Eve, but I will take sunshine and BBQs over internet spaceships every single time.

Tippia, correct me if I am wrong, but are those charts looking like they are plotting a slow, declining trend ? Looking at those charts for year-on-year, it's a very slow decline, but it's there....Looks worrisome to me :/ Perhaps I am wrong. The lines look more or less stable, but still a slight overall drop.

Is there someplace that I could actually obtain the raw data from ? I would like to get a perspective on the peaks and troughs and the year-on-year variances.

Interesting to see some sharp peaks in summer. I thought more folks would rather spend their summer vacations outdoors, an exception to that appears to be online gamers.

If you're talking about the year-to-year difference graph, it's not so much a decline as a reduction in increase… well, aside from the whole Incarna débâcle.

It's just the eve-offline data. If you “show source” on the page, you can see the XML that feeds into the different graphs, and I then use the fugliest hack of an XSLT stylesheet ever to convert it into CSV.

Yup. The whole “population goes down during summer” thing is largely a myth that came into prominence last summer as people tried to defend Incarna and the reductions in players it generated. The only other large summer dip was in 2009, and coincided with Unholy Rage when they banned 5,000 bots in one go… hmmm… P

My guess is that EVE is a bit different than most other online games: you don't log in for a short while to just do something while the food is cooking — you either log in for a minute to change skills/update trades/check on S&I timers, or you log in for hours on end to actually play. During summers, people don't have to get up the next day (or at least, when they do, they don't have to look like they've got a full night's sleep because there are no meetings to go to) so they do stay logged in for those extra hours in the evenings. Compare this to the late spring, when those late hours are used to finish “that last thing” before the vacation (be it finals, the report on this year's big project, crunch time for the last code commit or whathaveyou), or early autumn when people go back to school/work full of energy and with new delusions of doing a good job in a timely fashion… Blink

Im so bored of players whining about this and that.
You should all be grateful CCP developed such an awesome game and continue to put money into it to improve it even further.
