So is the Typhoon a Missileboat?

Speaking as a regular phoon pilot, I would avoid using this in PVE. Save for a Mael, while Lilu's points are all pertinent regarding the possible drawbacks of a Mael vs Sansha rats, overall it will perform better than the Phoon.

Save your phoon for PVP. By which I mean, wormholes and maybe lowsec. Like the Domi, you hardly see them in nullsec, everyone is now flying drake/cane or tier 3 sniper blawbs. A torp-neut phoon is pretty much useless for most current nullsec doctrines.

Not true. Try doidng incursions and SPECIALLY wormholes adn you will see how DC is VERY VERY important on a lot of ships.

By "PVE" in this case I meant "missions", which is what the OP is going to be doing.
And for missions, damage controls are pointless.

The OP did say that he was going to be running in Amarr space, which means few explosive foes and a lot of EM/therm.

AFAIK you get quite a few angel/Minmatar missions down there.

... Why would you dedicate so many slots to the guns on a ship that is so heavily optimized for missiles?

Go for an Apoc or an Abaddon instead if you have the skills for it.

Or a Maelstrom, which is a better ship for a third of the training time.

Minmatar missions only if you're the kind of person who does anti-navy missions. Angel isn't nearly as common as it would be in minnie space, which was the original assumption.

As for the slots dedicated to guns; you would otherwise have three empty high slots, and three heavily stacking penalized BCUs in the lows. You'd also be blowing about 20mil more on rigs, although if cost isn't a factor (which I assume it is if you're in a typhoon) then you could theoretically put more tank rigs there.

Thanks for the replies people, both the informative ones and the lulzdrama ones. P

Space. It seems to go on and on forever. But then you get to the end and a gorilla starts throwing barrels at you.

You haven't actually used that shield booster, have you?

Tanking is for wimps.

But seriously a 'phoon with with guns, missiles and heavy drones and a skilled pilot can deal so much damage and move fast enough that sustained tanking is not really an issue in most missions.

Typhoon is the "Swiss Army Knife", it is not perfect, it is skill intensive, but it is damn flexible and very handy if you want to solo in it and have to take care of everything yourself. E.g. for PVE in Wormholes you can easily fit a scan probe launcher, salvager and tractor beam while still doing reasonable dps and being able to solo tank a C2. For PVP you can use the high slots for neutralizing enemies cap while fielding a large HP buffer.
