Can you open the Orca's ore hold in space?

I've been flying one for about a year now and only just realized it had one. For that entire time I never saw an ore hold while right-clicking it in space and the only information I've found on the subject anywhere is "right-click on the orca and select ore hold" without any indication whatsoever of when or where it can be accessed except while docked.

On the one hand I feel rather dumb for not having noticed a potentially important aspect of the ship, but on the other hand it's never showed up in normal usage so I have to wonder just how useful a feature it really is.

Yes you can move stuff to the ore hold in space.

Commonly used by miners so the hulks drop their ore into the orca's corp hangar, then the orca pilot distributes that between his cargo and ore hold as needed
