Not taking frigates that are fine (check RvB popularity, quite a few were flying 125mm) and turn them on their heads
The merlin was/still will be massively used as a tanky fregate. The fact that a few RvBs used them with rails should not hide that 1) sniping merlin were a minority 2) rails without an optimal bonus hit far away anyway (tip : small T2 locus rigs arent expensive) 3) sniping merlins are useless in real pvp situations (not mutual wardecs like yours or arranged 1v1s) 4) buy a fuck1ng harpy and stop crying.

With the update it retains its tank and does 130 dps with Null (well within scram range), new Merlin is awesome.

Hey,

You bring up good points, most of them have already been answered in the F&I forum feedback on the frigates here(should tackle issues number 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 - bombardment role as been removed as per player feedback).

Regarding 4, that also is something we are talking about and considering; nothing is set in stone at the moment, but one point we were discussing was to have better roles for weapons instead of just going for the biggest one all the time. Let's face it, the only reason that limits weapon usage right now is fittings, as you mentioned, and maybe it is time to give more interesting choices to our player base.

So, for instance, within a same weapon class (say, blasters), we could further improve the short range variations of the weapon (electrons) to be better at taking down ships one size below than longer range versions (neutrons), which would be balanced by the fact that the longer range variation themselves would do more damage but hit less often undersized targets.

So, as you said, the goal would be to allow choosing which kind of targets your ship wants to engage: as a cruiser, do I want to be able to fight my own class size effectively (fit medium neutrons), or trade that ability to be able to hit frigates a bit more often (electrons) but at the risk of being at a disadvantage against other cruisers?

Of course, this still is a high-pitch idea and there are no guarantees it will come in at any point at all. Also, we would need to make sure such change would not make it easy or even easier for larger classes to hit smaller ones (webs, neuts / noses and drones already are good deterrents), as each ship classes is supposed to have a purpose, we definitely do not want to abide by the "bigger is better" philosophy.

Believe me the last thing I want to be doing is trolling a dev Shocked but the examples you refer to as future development options actually allready reflect the current state of affairs on TQ. Are you referring to further bolstering these differences? If you do remember to do it through buff (increase trackign of electrons / 180s etc etc) and not through nerf (decreasing the tracking of neutrons / 425s etc etc).

If I may be allowed to voice a personal opinion: do not change the current balance. Electrons are allready every well balanced against neutrons and both against ions etc. Nor should you confuse the races (i.e. neuts stay as they are, ions get pulse range for reduced dps and electron get minmattar fal off for reduced dps etc) but rather go for something unique (i.e. electrons apply warp jamming, ions sensor damping, 180s web, 220s paint, light pulses neut etc etc) but in this case be prepared to severely nerf the dps.

Well I am transgressing now...

I dont see the point in any t1 frigates anymore.

So many ISK Faucets in eve that even the new players with half a brain and initiative can make hundreds of millions within the first month of playing.

And face it, barely anyone spends there first month learning to PvP. By the time they reach the stage of wanting to go PvP they can use an inty or AF.

I may be the only player who thinks this but I believe starting with the most commonly used T1 frigs is a good idea. It will produce the most amount of debate in the shortest time possible, and when it settles down the dev's will have a much more stable baseline to balance the other, less understood frigs. The 'combat' frigs will still be the most flown T1 frigs due to having the best all round performance.

Getting those sorted first will mean less of a quagmire later on.
