Confirming. I can't even keep a thread on the front page anymore. It's sad.

Essentially this.

People come to the forums, they make badly articulated threads supported by data they either made up or haven't understood and then we get called trolls for calling them out on their failings.

This is a discussion forum, yet some people come here under the impression that anyone joining the discussion with a view polar to their own is some kind of troll. We aren't trolls, we are just very thorough in presenting our arguments concerning internet space ships.

I'm a troll because I agree with people. Granted, they might be trolls themselves (or goons), but ...

Not agreeing with you isn't trolling.
Trolls seldom have an opinion though. They simply act contrary for the sake of acting contrary. Do their best to derail and most of the time start by telling you how dumb you are, never really explaining why. EVE forums and it isn't restricted to GD in any way shape or form is full of this.
Every thread in EVE is hit with a full page of one liners and snot shots with no content or substance related to the OP. Most forums you stop reading after page one because it becomes a bickering contest. EVE forums, you dont even start reading until page 2 because Page one is troll baits.

Obviously there are the genuine trolls, who just post one liners or personal attacks, but quite a few posters on here go very in depth explaining their opinions.

Tippia is a good example of this, I've seen her in a number of threads write half page replies where every point and counterpoint is supported with evidence and thoroughly thought through logical arguments. Then I see the post dismissed as trolling because it doesn't agree with the OP.

Similarly anyone ever found to be in support of ganking or violence is dismissed as a troll. The main problem for me with these forums isn't the trolling, its the people who cry troll every time they meet an argument they can't dismiss with persuasive reasoning.

When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.

But in forums, all the dunces can be in confederacy against a mediocre guy too.

Greetings capsuleer,

No, speaking your mind is not wrong. It is a fundamental tenet of these boards. However, if you speak only idiot you should expect to be mocked, laughed at and to have your mind ridiculed.

As other capsuleers are also speaking their minds.

I'm not sure I entirely agree; I have a couple of threads with serious proposals for major changes in the game that are, I'd say, 90% populated by positive and constructive responses. It is possible.

However.

It is the sad truth that most OPs don't really deserve much respect in the way of positive, constructive responses. They are generally badly typed, poorly constructed, lacking insight and demonstrate an incredible level of short-term self-centeredness.

So to answer the OP's question: yes, speaking your mind is wrong when your mind is lazy, lacking in knowledge and coherence, and unwilling to adapt it's viewpoints and axioms. YMMV. TANSTAAFL. All Rights Reserved.

I suppose I should have refined my scope to EvE General Discussion. I rarely if ever roam outside its borders.

So close...

Let's say you see a fat, old lady wobbling up the street. You think to yourself, "Hey. There's a fat, old lady wobbling up the street." Then, you shout, "Hey! Fat old lady wobbling up the street!" That'd be wrong.

Let's say you see a post criticizing the arbitrary and short-sighted way a particular (nameless) forum is being moderated by a handful of rank amateurs who succeed in only curbing freedom of speech, but are in no way organizing or managing the threads. And, this post is locked with an admonition to the poster to "Watch out what you say about how we moderate this forum!" So, you post in this forum (unamed), "Hey! The way you moderate this forum sucks!" That, too, would be wrong.

On the other hand, observing how the wind blows in a particular community (unamed) you pucker up and post something like, "Goons? They're great! I'm not against Goons!" (In hopes they leave you off their Shoot On Sight list,) THAT would be a good thing. It would be perfectly RIGHT!

(How'm I doin'?)

The right to free speech doesn't automatically carry with it the right to be taken seriously.

Its all personal perception. You need thick skin to deal with some of the peeps here. If you post on your main, i would be somewhat tame in what you say, use an alt to post (not in your corp).

Never be afraid to ask questions, many will be willing to help you out, regardless of trolls.

As a general rule, on any forum, speaking your mind is perfectly OK...as long as what you say doesn't conflict in any way with the "accepted" vision of things.

For example, if you were to say "EVE is hard", you would get none or very few people arguing otherwise. If you said EVE in some ways is easier than WoW, because even WoW doesn't have local on PvP servers, you'll be smacked topside the head so friggin' hard, within seconds you'll find you've been hammered into the ground up to your ears. Even if what you said is perfectly true.

Same goes for literally every forum out there. The moment you say something that goes contrary to the belief of the vocal minority, you'll get trolled to death. And depending on the moderators, even suspended or banned. Like when I was playing Darkfall, and presented some accurate observations about the state of the game...BAM...one month suspension. Even though what I said was absolutely 100% accurate, it wasn't an opinion, just hard verifiable facts.

It's perfectly normal. And you do have a choice. You can speak your piece and then get trolled/eat a suspension, or you can nod along like everyone else, or you can quit. It's up to you. But speaking from the high pedestal of advanced age, I can tell you none of this matters one iota. In 10 years, nobody is going to give a flying gak about any of this, including you.

You are a funny guy. You meant to say as long as you suggest something that benefits Null Bears you will be taken seriously?

Why yes.

The level of verbal abuse I need to dish out to the Null Bear to get him to semi-shutup and allow discussion of core problems is quite impressive. Most people aren't really willing to be that hostile.

I find it easy cause Goons are worthless cowards hiding behind Blobs and Local.

Greetings capsuleer Tassik,

I do not believe capsuleer Dulake said what you say he did. Anyone that understands New Eden and can form a cohesive point will be taken seriously.

If, however, your modus operandi is to rant, rave and make various spurious allegations *coughs* then yes, you are unlikely to be taken seriously.
