I resently found this "anime" Planetes. It's a story that takes place in like 2050 when humans in space is becoming more common. The technology is Combustion Rockets, Space elevator, and capsule space stations. BAsiclly at this point there is a lot of left over space debris, just stuff, and at some point when those SpaceX passenger planes gets hit by a screw left over from something in space, and it kills everyone. Since that's a real possibility for the future of Space X and sending planes into to space to get around the Earth faster.

So basically corporations and governments have to start cleaning up that space debris. Because all of the debris in space can hit other satellites and create more debris, and so on. So people work in 15$ an hour jobs cleaning up space junk. And the show is just about someone who cleans up space junk. That's it's it's a boring long show full of talking and slow space shots.

It's a hard Sci Fi. Anyone else out there a fan of this stuff? Or am I crazy? :P

Another good hard SciFi to give an example of what this is like. Would be the movie Moon.

The Mote in God's Eye is a pretty good hard SciFi Book. Its about the first contact between Humans and Aliens but with changed roles. The Humans are the more advanced this time.

The Author Larry Niven also wrote Ringworld - another very good Book.

yeah, another really good one from them is called footfall. same pair of writers that did mote in gods eye.
too bad more TV shows, movies, and games (cough eve cough) didn't make space more realistic. most I've seen of hard scifi in popular media is 2001 a space oddesy where they have realistic spaceship mechanics for the most part, and some of the dogfighting in battlestar galactica where they actually acknowledge that things in motions stay in motion in space and that you don't fly like a jet in space. then there's the comment from mass effect 2 about a railgun that is going to ruin someones day even if you miss.

Hard sci fi is kinda rare these days. Good hard sci fi is even rarer. You have to know a lot about science to write it and know a lot about writing fiction to make it interesting to others. The number of people who are proficient at both aren't very many. Hard sci for the sake of being hard sci fi isn't very interesting in itself to me.

I'd prefer a well written space opera any day of the week.

oh yeah, and if you're going to real any of larry nivens stuff, you have to keep in mind that most of the stuff he wrote was written before computers existed/were very previlant and this is a very notable fact in the books.

Then you'll love the anime I posted. It's a totally slow space opera lol. It ... has it's weak moments... I don't blame you if you skip episode 4or 5... with the ninjas... that was just stupid.

I've just gotten through it. it's about humans trying to get to Jupiter.

Hmmm, well I liked moon, I remember at the time there was something that pissed me off, think I mighta had the ending figured out after like 20min or something like that. Still a good movie nonetheless

Apollo 18 is also a decent watch. Might not be as hard as some, but it's entertaining enough

There should be a rather awesome pic here

I liked Planetes a *LOT*. I was really awesome. I think I was planning on watching one or two per day, but I liked it so much I did it over a weekend, almost non stop.

I can't remember any other anime I liked as much... Geass was good, Hellsing, kinda... but nothing compared to Planetes.

Nowdays that movie-like SCI-FI is so scarce (expensive to make I think), anime shows are a blessing.

As far as books go, anything by Arthur C. Clarke or Charles Sheffield should suit.

Anything by Greg Egan.

Permutation City is great.
His short story "The Jewel" which im sure you can find somewhere on the net is amazing and will leave you with that feeling of my god by the end. Considering its short length I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good read.

However.

Greg Egan's Diaspora is hands down the best Sci Fi story I have ever read. It is a very hard read. Hard SciFi at its hardest. However the concepts and vision of human existance billion years into the future is breath taking. When I read and understood where the character find themselves at the end of the book I had shivers.
Make no mistake it is a hard read. So if you think Ender's Game is the crux of SciFi (and I wish to slap you) then forget this book.

Lexx is the only sci fi show I haven't been able to bear watching all the way through.

Canadian show (meaning it's weird) from way back (early 2000s) with totally nerd-centered sexual overtones

Lexx had pretty nice 3d effects for it's budget iirc...and for it's time.

Other then that...it's quite different imo, many facepalms. ;)

Back on topic, I tried watching a movie called EXAELLA, that I found on pirate bay just the other day.
It's about the future, how mankind dwell deep underground in stasis pods, how the resources have been
depleted, one girl wakes up and try make it to the surface...I failed watching after 10 min and started snoring Big smile

It recived a pretty good rating on imdb though, 7.2.

Check it out at imdb

Just a fair warning, I only lasted 10 minutes, the movie decription on imdb says "anime, drama, action" in it.

So for all I know, there might be alot of action past the 10 minutes mark, where I failed.
I haven't had a 2nd go at it yet...history will only repeat itself if I try watch it again tonight, so I'll save it for later Blink

Hope you enjoy it though
