behold, someone killing a 100M+ isk tier 3 BC in a starter noobie ship.

Epic fail that is not inspirational at all to a new player.
The player operating that noob ship is anything but a new player.

"You will hear that you need to train for 6 months before standing a chance in PVP"
The video is about a player that is many years old operating a noob ship and has years of skills behind them.
So that statement is an epic fail using the video as the basis to prove the claim.

"You will hear that T1 ships are useless"
That is a valid statement if you can fly a ship well with lots of supporting skills maxed out T1 ships
can be usefull.

"You will hear that you are helpless against older players."
For the most part that is a true valid statement.
Game skills are required to be competetive but that is not all you need.
You also need experience in playing the game the learning curve is very high.
Even if you buy a toon that is several years old and has trained lots of skills already
that does not make you a match for an older experienced player.

I shared a little bit of these feelings ...
then I started to do some PVP.

I only have 6.5mil SP spread all over the place like a perfect Jack of all trades, yet still managed to control the range with a measly rifter, or tank a far more skilled player with a T2 frigate while doing ridiculously low damage because of the T1 mods fitted on it.
I learned from little mistakes, either right then or later on while asking about what I did wrong.

Sure you can be all bitter and blasé if all you care about is being the hero-solo-PVPer like some youtube videos, but the veterans started as newbs once and didn't learn their experience by spinning their ships while their skills trained.

The beauty of Eve is that you can go get yourself blown up hundred times and not lose XP or ranks, SP continue to train when you're podded so there's no consequences going out and trying to take on older players with what you can afford to replace easily, like a noob ship.

It all depends on what you want to do in this game IMHO. If a guy wants to PvP then by all means do so. It only takes about 30 days to train frigate skills to level 4 and all the supporting skills to level 4. If you concentrate on that in 30 days your skills will be up to par. You are also going to need a fair supply of ISK to buy the ships you will go thru while learning PvP. That isk does not happen over night. So 30 days of game time to prep for a PvP career seems about right to me. If a guy is training other skills along side of combat skills getting to a decent PvP skill base will take longer how long depends on what you want to do.

But we do have 3 parts to this equation.

1. Isk to fund your game. Do not lose a ship you can not afford to replace.

2. Skills to support your career. You do not have to be good at flying a battleship in order to PvP. But you have to be good at flying something even if it is a frigate in order to PvP at a decent level. This includes decent fitting skills. It takes some time and planning and does not happen overnight. Just because you have decent skills though does not mean you will be good at PvP in your first few attempts.

3. experience in EVE and EVE game mechanics and rules. This last part mostly only comes from doing. At some point if a guy wants to do PvP you have to get out and do it. But the first two parts have to be supportive otherwise you will fail.
