anyone seen this behavior under windows 8 yet?

Not sure if it was here or on tera/total war forums (same problem there) but I think some1 metioned that there's no problem with win 8. Will give it a go next weekend though I hate dual booting and I didn't get win 8 running in VirtualBox together with 3D support.

Would also be interesting to know if there's any1 out there with the same setup not having this issue.

I confirm the issue occurrs after upgrading to Wondows 8 Pro x64 with NVidia card:

Windows 8 x64 Pro
Intel Core Quad Q8300
8GB RAM
Asus P5QD turbo
NVidia GTX 570
Both system and EVE disks are OCZ SSD.

then you're lucky you dont play games which DO lock up with ATIs. Fact is its is NOT only eve having issues. Had lockups with Tribes Ascend too, so its at least another one.

No issues with Tribes:ascend here. But I get the hardlockups with eve in windowed mode.. especially with multiple clients or a video playing in VLC (hardware accel off or on). Would love for CCP or AMD to address this. Gonna sell/exchange my 7870 before that happens I bet.

Wondering if any of you played with the "Effect" settings left side to the graphics settings. I played a bit around with it and as long as I keep "GPU particles" unchecked, I didn't get a crash for an hour now (not even while shooting, which usually means insta-crash for me). When I checked it again and opened the map, I got the sweet buzzing sound again... Could prolly any1 give this a go?

CCP -- can we get an answer here about what is going on?

I just had my map F10 hard lock about 10 times in a row.

Makes it sorta hard to play the game. This was with two clients running. Win 7 64 bit, Intel i7 860, AMD 7970, 12.8 drivers.

The nerfs to supercaps will cause more super pilots to join the largest alliances who can properly "support" their deployment, further concentrating firepower/wealth in EVE. The end result will be fewer "fun" fights, and will hurt EVE in the long run.

I got this screen freeze issue to. And too late did I spot this thread...my 7950 has been RMA'ed and is due to return with no fault found! Sad

Sorry if I have missed a post in this thread, but I wanted to ask. When you get this freeze, does the screen turn black, and you get a looping noise that sounds like a buzz? And then the only way to get control back is to hard-reset?

If so, I had the problem across multiple games on my MSI Twin Frozr III Radeon HD 7850 2GB OC Edition card. Specifically I had it when running an overclock. Even a tiny one of 50MHz core clock. I found that the drivers on the AMD website would cause any kind of overclock to cause crashes within the game, however when using the driver DVD supplied with the card itself (older drivers), the GPU will run fine and I can overclock it very far without any issues at all.

So.... if you have OC'd cards, try resetting the cards to the default they came shipped with, and try using the drivers supplied on the disc. It worked for me, may work for some of you.

Back again with a working solution.

as stated earlier i tried running a mac pro hexa core xeon with a xfx ati 7950.
system performance was great but i got random freezings with eve under windows 7 and the mac client sucks forever.
so i swaped back to my ati 5770 and everything worked gread under win 7 and still sucked in osx.
so went to a nvidia 560gtx and it worked great under win7 but the performace is not great on a big screen like 2550 x1440 resolution.

i still got my ati 7950 idleing arround on my desk. so i gave it a last try.
i bought a i3 a gigabyte z77 board 8gb ram and set up a fresh windows with most recent drivers.
i tell you. i never had a frozen windows again. can run 4 eve clients with every deatail on with 30-60 feames synced or even one client without sync with 250frames on the big screen. no freezing at all for 2 weeks now and i played alot.
only thing is on 4 clients my i3 is running on 80-100% so no match for my hexacore xeon which is pritty bored while i use the mac pro now for webwork and Pictures :)

at least its not only ati/ amd fault :) and i enjoy the great performance with reduced power using.
as my 7950 and i3 are nice powersavers :) with great performance for the buck i spend.

The fault just freezes the entire PC, as in the screen just gets stuck at whatever it is doing (including the mouse + Keyboard). I don't get black screen...and so far the only way I have found to recover is a Hard reset, even giving the PC 6+ hours to recover seems to be a waste of time.

Is there not a solution that doesn't involve simply skipping over the issue, as your resolution suggests that the solution is a change in hardware? I am sure I speak for at least a few of us here in saying we spent good money hoping the 7xxx Series card would be a nice upgrade, to either switch to nVidia (costing yet more money) or swap out Mobo, CPU and maybe RAM.

So far this issue for me is ONLY affecting Eve Online, all my other games work perfectly. I RMA’ed the GFX thinking the fault lied with that (as the fault occurred after upgrading from the 5970) only to have the supplier bench mark test it against some of the GFX intense games out there to be told it passed with flying colours. CCP should be looking into this issue more than AMD as they will lose prescriptions over this, I don’t want to stop playing but I can’t risk taking any ship into combat (PVE or PVP) with the risk my PC is a ticking time bomb of failure.

As the freezes (locks up) the entire PC, it has made it next to impossible to get any sort of diagnostics out of it. Even the Windows event logger doesn’t get any event apart from an unscheduled shut down, which doesn’t help me localise the fault.

Well, a little summary.

The hard locks (buzzig sound, screen freeze, only reset or power button helps, NO entry about a problem in windows events) happen on (as far as I know) sytems that run AMD cards of the 7000 series workin together with Intel's workstation chipsets (X58, X79) mostly.

Other games that are infected by this issue are Tera and Total Wat Shogon 2 (same hard locks from what google results show).

Neither CCP nor AMD are a help (afaik CCP weren't able to reproduce this issue which is quite ridiculous).

edit: For every1 this happens sooner or later as soon as you open the map. I personally crash my system also if I start shooting enemies or use drones on them (funny thing is mining drones or strip miners aren't affected).

Though, I didn't have a crash since I disabled the "GPU particles" option in "Effects" settings next to the graphics settings. You could prolly try this in tell me if it works (driver is latest catalyst beta).

Well, that's the reply I got from the bug hunter team after the bug report:

Quote:
Thank you for your bugreport titled: System freeze on combat or map
We are already aware of this problem, and have added your bugreport to the existing issue in our defect tracking system.

At least they admit that there's a bug.

I have the same issue, and filled a bug report :

Mostly dual boxing with dual screen and when i set a course with auto-pilot and open galaxy map.. after a few seconds everything freeze.

Some shogun2 players have the same issue with HD7xxx cards.

And many users using socket 1155 socket are not impacted (personnaly i've the issue with old good socket 1156 and first generation i7 + Asus HD7970 DC2T-3GD5).

I found something in shogun2 forum we may try :

Quote:

Symptom:

During gameplay the system will hard lock *and* there's a repeating audio sound in the speakers. The only solution is to power cycle the machine.

Cause:

GPU Halt. Per what I read, this is due to the 7970 being PCIe 3.0 and that AMD was very aggressive with the internal power management of the GPU -- especially with PCIe 2.0 buses.

Fix:

Open RegEdt32
Modify HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000\PP_GPUPowerDownEnabled
Set this to "0" instead of "1"

To be continued :)

Not sure but if this is the same setting as disabling ULPS, it's unfortunately not working afaik. Though, this wouldn't explain the lock ups on ivy bridge setups which are pcie gen 3 capable. On Asus ROG forums I've seen a post of some1 got a reply of an AMD guy telling him that there's an incompatibility between cross-/tri/quadfire setups and X58/X79 chipsets. Wouldn't be surprised if single card setups are affected aswell since the symptoms (hard lock up, buzzing sound) were the same as we run into.
Anyway. gl with the fix and plz tell us, if it works or not. :)

Out of curiosity, I just flashed a different bios to my 7970 (there's an official GHz bios of AMD for reference design cards floating around and since my card was standing it easily, I thought I'd give it a try).
Well, first flash wet wrong for some reason so I had to google a bit. Luckily my card got a dual bios (afaik NOT all 7970 cards got it although it should be in reference design already, so if you think about flashing this yourself, MAKE SURE YOU GOT DUAL BIOS BEFORE BRICKIN YOUR CARD!!!), so I just had to switch to the untouched bios. Two flashes later (first got borked again but just ran it a second time without rebooting), it completed.

What I can say yet is:

I used Furmark for stability testing (passed)
open/closed map in eve ~40-50 times (no crash, needs further testing)
and last but not least (my all time lock up) - I've warped to 5 cosmic anomalies and killed the pirates (no crash, needs further testing)

I don't call it stable yet, will need some more testing.

What I figured out yet is that the card still clocks down while running eve with two differences:
1. the GPU clock only went down to 501MHz now / before 300MHz (coded into bios)
2. the vram clock NEVER went down / before 150MHz (always running 1500, also coded into bios)

Well, I'll tell ya more (good news hopefully) soon.

edit: and btw, the new bios is lowering the gpu voltage aswell (before it was 1.175, now it's 1.135 for me if I remember right).

edit: Ran into a hard lock again, so new gfx bios doesn't help.

I found this article :
http://www.behardware.com/news/lire/27-10-2012/

It describes problems with the ATI 7870 cards from wrong capacitors in some cases. I ask the author about clarify the symptoms. He answered: "Yes with the issue I described there is a sound loop and the reset button is not responding. However these symptoms could also lead to other issues related to the graphics card."

yeah but he also states "the system crashes and they get a black screen (loss of video signal)."
But at least in my case it just frozes and I hear the buzzing sound loop. Also, my reset button works but that probably depends on the PSU aswell since mine disconnects the power for ~2 seconds which is no real reset (but that's a Seasonic thing).

btw, on totalwar forums there's a guy saying he's in contact with AMD and they are aware of the problem (that's good news that they figured out 8 months later that there's a problem).

http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/35440-7xxx-Series-AMD-cards-freezes-and-lock-ups/page117

They got exactly the same problem like we get.

Im using an nVidia card (GTX 570) and im experiencing the same issue so I dont think its restricted to AMD video cards. Its something on Eves end and I started experiencing this issue after the last patch.

Same problem.

Just bought an AMD HD7850 a month ago to use with my old rig - i7 920 on ga-ex58-ud5.

Complete system freeze in map mode, but also at completely random times. The first day I had it twice in 5 minutes, now 3 days nothing even though i'm using the map heavily. I run single client only. Though I did dust the computer just in case there was some heat build up or other nasty surprises.

However the card is cool as ever ~ 50°C during play.

Also this is the only game that freezes the comp... and I tried hard to do it with other games.

Bug report sent.

I have also just upgraded to a 7850 2gb card & i'm having problems opening the map, PC will hard lock - same symptoms as OP.

I also have this problem in Shogun 2, see my thread on it here: http://forums.totalwar.com/showthread.php/51616-Sound-Crashing-in-Campaign-Mode

shame really, my 5770 is alot better than this - had no problems with EVE whatsoever using that.
