The problem is, 41 days to be able "use" tengu (not really fly) vs 9 days Proteus.


There isn't a new mod for the proteus. They are talking about the new drone damage mod. It's just that the proteus has extra low slots to fit it better.

You can actually make a decent exploration proteus. Is it better than a tengu? There is no perfect answer. You can make a proteus with almost the same drone capabilities of an Ishtar (4 heavies or sentries vs 5) and better tank. Since you still focus on drones for damage you can fit all the utility of an all I one ship. A tengu still relies on its high slots for damage and mids for tank.

As with all t3 ships however, IMO you want to max out your core skills first. It seems you kind of rushed the Ishtar, so I would focus on making it awesome first. T2 heavies and sentries. High navigation skills (for speed tanking). High fitting skills and armor tank skills.

Although drone Proteus possesses huge potential for an exploration vessel it is also lacking in drone dps department. That is because it can't field 5th heavy/sentry drone. Introduction of DDA'a ( Drone Damage Amplifiers ) means that Proteus can now fit 3 of those and achieve even more drone dps than Ishtar can now ( Ishtar is considered to be one of the best exploration boats ).

Ishtar
Ogres : 475
Gardes : 450 ( 538 with 2xsentry damage rigs )

Proteus (now)
Ogres : 380
Gardes : 360

Proteus (with 3x DDA's)
Ogres : 580
Gardes : 550

Of course you could fit those mods on Ishtar making it even stronger ( approximately 700-750 dps drone damage ) but it will be very problematic to do so because of fitting and tanking issues. You won't be able to utilize those mods to full extent in sentry fit because you will need to use omnis and there is no room for tank left.

Fitting those mods on Proteus will not gimp your tank that much. You should also use blasters, which will provide additional 225 dps for total of ~800dps. You are able to apply your blaster damage quite efficiently because of good tanking and mwd speed. Of course blasters are meant to be used mainly against battleships.
Your typical exploration Tengu get around 700dps using 6 HML's. It is easier to use and slightly more effective but it isn't : "way better" than Proeteus with those mods.

Taking everything into consideration - Proteus ( with DDA's ) is superior to Ishtar in every aspect ( excpet the price of course Lol ) and it's quite close to current Tengu.

Fit like this will become very viable for low/null exploration :

Just switch navcom for omni and you get very good sentry boat.

If you want to use cruiser sized drone boats then training for Proteus is a good choice in Inferno. But what Derath said - you need to train core skills + subsystems to at least 4 ( getting level 5 is a must in the long run, at least for offensive/defensive systems ).

The above fit is almost exactly how I fit mine on the test server, perhaps even over tanked, could swap the EANM for another damage mod.

I also put together this sentry fit. 553DPS at 52km plus the rails. Even gets almost 700dps total damage using spike at decent range, when the salvage drones come along the drone Proteus will have really good utility.

It’s is an interesting idea, not sure yet though, the fit above I tested in a serpentis level 4 the reactive hardener changed to 30/30 kin/therm (from 15% omni, and is active so not affected by skills, not even the bonus active hardeners get when offline) gradually over a couple of minutes, it stays set at that level unless switched of so you should be set for the remaining pockets.

This makes it better than an EANM against two damage types only. It allegedly changes to 60 against single damage type but I have not seen this, not tested it against sleepers yet and want to test it against angels, I hope it changes to max exp damage resistance but suspect it may end up at 30/30 exp/kin, Not sure.

jut came across this thread with the same background - the new plating, drone dmg modifier etc. Will be interesting, because i also fly an armor tanked Ishtar in Angel space. Have done a 7/10 in it.

I might also try to exchange one Omni tracking link and use a sensor booster. My drones kill at >100km distance, so I am not sure what´s better - tracking or more targeting range.

I also use this ship as guardian for a short range ship (HAM legion). Just keep 80km range and tell the drones to assist.

This looks like a very interesting new module. I'm looking forward to trying it out.

CCP should add more NPC 0.0 space to open it up and liven things up: the Stepping Stones project.
