Exploration a waste of time for a new player?

Here is the deal. Mostly anything you try in EVE is hard for the new player. It is because your skills are not high and you have little experience. If you want instant gratification then EVE may not be for you.

I support two accounts by exploring. If you know what you are doing, and it seems many here don't, and have the skills it is very lucrative.

That is all. I have enough competition as it is.

I think the OP has nailed it. If you spend all of your skill points in exploration skills for the first 45 days of your account then maybe you will get good at finding sites. But you will suck at combat which is what happens once you find a site and go in.
So in the end maybe by the time your toon is 90days old then you will have enough skill base to be good at exploration.
But you will still be very specialized into exploration and weak on everything else. Eve takes time mostly for the skills to grow.
And for the record most often you will spend hours searching and not finding anything. Often when you do find something it is already picked clean. Even in low traveled areas. I think you need to really get away from civilized space to find much of anything. And then that requires again more skills to survive in out of the way locations. Such is the life of the explorer.

So...I moved to lo sec. Found a radar site first system and pulled a 3.5mill piece of loot of it. Now just have to figure out how to deal with the rats. They chased me around for about 20min before I had to give up on the other items. I'll probably stay out here. Much better living on the edge.

You need to learn to kite them. Get some drone skills to gnaw away at them. The low sec rats are mostly not all that hard, frigs and cruisers. But they can warm you up a little bit if your skills are not that great. Sometimes they spawn nice little batches and sometimes there are almost none. You will learn what sites do what.

However, with lower skills and DPS, you just need to learn to fly away and around them while chewing them up, if slowly.

You'll soon wonder what all the worry was about low-sec, and congratulations on making the leap from hi-sec.

Any rats present need to cleared before the cans will open, but sometimes you can get lucky with no warp in rats and nothing showing up during your looting / code breaking.
