As far as I can tell the pod was knocked free from the balloon by the turbulence of the jet stream.

The rest of the "vehicle" completed the trip up and back.

The pod would have been travelling at around 58m/s on impact if it had no parachute.

Do we know the pod came off while the balloon was still climbing? Im wondering if the reason we were seeing the horizon behind the pod just before losing the pod was drag from the descent. I was the mission planner for the NASA solar aircraft program (Pathfinder and Helios) and we never saw turbulence that violent at altitude. This makes me think it was not turbulence, but a descent through the air, with the chute oscillating side to side, swinging the payload about and allowing drag to blow the pod off to the side.

No on both accounts.

Wasted time would imply they didn't enjoy it, which is clearly wrong if you watch the Mission Debriefing videos etc.

Also, it was at least successful once ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqoX38zv1oE ) and today's run was pretty cool, too, even tho the pod warped off.

lol at the lame publicity stunt pulled by CCP

Richard Garriott pulled the same schtick in 2008 by going to space and carrying a copy of the character names to the international space station, shortly followed by Tabula Rasa going under.

So....CCP is basicly doing some that is so fall 2008 and out of style.

Dang that I had to miss it, wonder what happened to the pod? It wasn't podkilled, it just warped to safe, hopefully it wasn't camped.

Edit: Or did it log off and just go in some random direction. Stupid not having agro timer, couldn't keep it locked before it disappeared.

Coincidence I guess. Only ever saw Zero Punctuation's EVE review which was hilarious.

I dunno about anyone else, but I was hoping for an estes rocket or two to take out the pod before it even got over 100meters.

Those are from the cameras on the main rig which were recovered, the pod itself broke off and plummeted back to Earth before decent.

They look great tho!
