The history of Mining

I'm not very active in New Eden at the moment but I belive Hulkageddon is yet again active and I can certainly see a good number of threads on the subject so maybe some veterans can help me out.

I have played this game since 2005 but I am frankly ignorant regarding the mining profession outside of 'helping' corpmates by mining in a nano navy apoc in 2007 or somesuch.

I was wondering how much the profession has advanced since the launch of eve. DId we have Covetor's right from the start?

I remember discussion about the worht of a hulk from when it was introduced. I don't remember when it was but I recall a pricetag of 500m being pushed about and then discussion about how long it would take to make a return on the investment. Most of that talk was about low or null sec since it was never originally intended as a shp for use in high-sec but obviously times change and high-sec dwellers also seek to use this ship.

So if anyone can give some detail to the historic progression of mining I (and others) would be sure to appreciate it!

Furthermore I guess I should say that I remember mining battleships being somewhat prevalent in 2006. A certain pirate corp would use them to make ISK in Basgerin when not fighting.

Huh, I was wondering what the hidden agenda might be. Now I won't have to !

From what I can find, mining barges were introduced in the Exodus expansion in 04 and exhumers were introduced in Red Moon Rising in 05

The miners song

"Its all the same.
Only the Roids change
Everyday i feel im wasting away

Sometimes i sleep
Sometimes its not for days
And the people i meet
just want to blast me into space

Sometimes you tell the day by the system that your in
and times when your alone and all you do is think (about how productive you could be in real life)

Im a miner
in a paper hull i ride
and im wanted dead or (actually just dead)
I dont normally troll, but when i do i do it on General Discussion.

Mining has changed very little since EVE was originally launched, the mechanic of activating a module and waiting has not changed at all. I started myself in February 2005, so I can't really speak to the history prior to that, but since then the major changes seen with regards to mining could be summed up as follows:

  1. Red Moon Rising expansion - December 2005 - Introduction of the Exhumer class mining vessels.
  2. Revelations I - November 2006 - Drone Regions added to the map and gravimetric sites introduced into the game.
  3. Revelations II - August 2007 - Introduction of the Rorqual.
  4. Quantum Rise - November 2008 - Introduction of the Orca.
  5. Escalation to Inferno - April 2012 - Removal of precious alloys from drone NPCs

I don't have the exact dates for it, but the changing of the NPC market to remove the unlimited supply of NPC goods that could be refined into minerals has had a significant impact on mining as well.

To be honest, it's one of the oldest mechanics still functioning in the game, and in my opinion well overdue for a complete overhaul to make it a more engaging and interesting part of EVE Online, on par with what the new probing system did to the exploration career.

In the beginning of the game pretty much EVERYBODY mined. Techell Corp was the largest battleship manufacturer in the first year of the game and most of their sales by far were done 'bring-your-own-minerals'.

Also the meta versions of the mining lasers were the most expensive modules in the game until T2 mining-lasers were finally introduced (I don't remember exactly when that happened, the old website had a nice page with all the different EVE-updates and their content, but I can't find it anymore).

It's true. Back in 2005 almost everyone I knew who were playing started with training mining to level 4 so they could use t2 mining lasers and get the ISK for their first combat vessels.

April 2008 The day they took shuttles off of NPC markets and made them player-manufactured effected the 2.4 ISK per unit cap on trit. and thus effected mining as well.

April 2012 pax amarria no longer caped nocxium at 535 isk per unit

This might be the one you mean, it's the one I used to find when barges and exhumers were introduced.

When I was young I stumbled on a Dallente Domi mining with lasers and drones. I was in a small frig and warped on top of him. The Domi suddenly filled the screen. I was like an ant beneath it.

:) It was one of the most terrifying moments of the game. I was like a deer in the headlights. Then I got out and patted myself on the back for escaping the mysterious monster. I just had to have one.

I loved my mining apoc ... AWSOME Cool .Imagine training for another racial bs first just to be able to make enough isk while training for the racial BS you actually needed/wanted wich in my case was the raven.Man i loved my one-volley-killeverything raven.

I remember thinking I'd be stuck forever in my mining Osprey.
