Anyway, I didn't realize that if my ship and pod are destroyed I could have gone back and possibly salvaged some of my cargo/gear. Is this possible? Wouldn't the person that destroyed me salvage it? Is there an easy way to locate the wreckage of your own ship? How long does it stay there?

1.) Yes it's possible to loot/salvage your own wreck.
2.) Yes likely someone else already did it before you return there (enemy or some random dude)
3.) It will be on the place you got destroyed, so if you know where you were destroyed you will find your wreck there (if it is not already looted/salvaged).
4.) Wrecks stay for 2 hours or downtime.
