I'm wanting to fly a t3 cruiser for missions

Hey guys, I don't get to play so much and when I do all I really wanna do is have some fun running missions.

I really like the Legion and the Loki, and I was wondering which one would be best for running missions preferably up to lvl4.
I know the tengu is probably better and there are tons of other ships that can do it better or faster or cheaper but at the end of the day this is a game and I play games to have fun and I just wanna fly one of those two.

If its just absolutely not a good idea to use a Legion or Loki then please let me know and I'll understand but if someone could give me some tips and a fitting or something I would really appreciate it. I don't want to have too much of a hard time so if it takes just way too much skill and commitment then I'd be open to flying something else.

Anyway moral of the story is if someone could please let me know all the info I need to fly a legion or loki for missions then that would be swell.

Thanks a ton,

a shield tanked autocannon loki with deadspace afterburner is a halfway decent mission boat. your only problems will be getting into effective range and shooting webbing frigs fast enough. the legion lacks a lttle in the DPS department imo.

edit, to clarify: the only real drawback of strategic cruisers in comparison to pirate BS's is the dps and dps projection. a well fit nightmare can project over 1k dps to about 50km. even a tengu can#t get close to that, but at least the tengu has up to 120km effective range.

I should buy an Ishtar.

would the nightmare be a cheaper option than the loki or legion?

Nightmare is more expensive. Keep in mind that if you are chosing lasers for missions you should be flying in Amarr space or scratch away on enemies with bad damage profile.

If you want to stay with those 2 I would recommend Loki as it has drones which help you with frigs and you can choose several damage types. You can also make a long range fit on it if you are ok with the DPS loss.

So the legion really is the loser here, huh? That's unfortunate, such a sexy ship. Is there anything in particular that the legion excels at or is it just a sub-standard t3 cruiser?

It has its niches like Incursions and I used it for instalocking small **** on gates in lowsec because it is one of the few ships which can sustain gatefire and enough scan res to lock up frigs. Otherwise its not so hot in PvE, range is limited, damage type as well and you will have problems once frigs come under your guns. A web and tracking computer is mandatory therefore.

Have you considered using them for incursions? Both ships can really shine there

The Legion is ok for L4. The range with 550 DPS @ 45-50km or 750 DPS @ 15-17km optimal isn't this limited in my opinion(there isn't another turret T3 that archives better projected DPS with close range weapons). It also is more efficient with the ammo cost considered, can use range effectively to tank without losing to much DPS and can omni tank nearly any L4 without much effort.

Being locked down to em/therm is a big drawback compared to the loki, however if you stick to amarr space it isn't a big problem, yes spending 45 minutes on a L4 guristas assault is more or less the worst case. Lack of drones isn't a big problem, if you know the missions and a web + 2 TCs generally solve the problem nicely. I for myself prefer the Legion a lot over the Loki, since it got a bit more constant damage at range, can switch ranges instant, has no ammo problems and don't relay on drones what is kind of useful in some missions where they can trigger agro and it is very enjoyable to fly.

A BS does the job better most of the time, by providing the extra DPS to get the job done quicker.

This is kind of embarrassing but it has been a long time since I played last and even then I mostly did orca stuff... I really dont know what an incursion is or what it entails, would you perhaps be able to elaborate? is it fun?

Edit: More so than just fun, considering the amount of isk I need to spend for a nice legion/loki, another question besides entertainment value is; Is there money to be made?

It is a bit like grouped missions where you do sites(like pockets in a mission) with 10-40 people together. Payout is handed out to every player in the fleet once the objective is complete(if your gang did the most damage) and sites re spawn in the the system so you warp to the next on the overview instead of getting a new missions from a agent. It also works with logistics, so you do pvp like buffer fittings instead of normal active tanking pve setups.

Both Loki and Legion are quite good at it, the Loki is a bit more flexible, since it can provide long ranged webbing support so the BS in the fleet can hit smaller ships better. The Legion is more or less the all out king when it comes to running the frig heavy sites(up to gangs completely consisting out of Legions and Logistics) because nothing take down Frigs faster than Legions with sensor boosters, multiply tracking computers and webs.

Incursions are basically sorta like group missions, although there are only a limited number of sites and work somewhat differently.

check this out for background info on them:
http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Incursion_%26_Sansha's_Nation

check this site for anything you need to know about how to fly them:
http://incursionguide.wordpress.com/

They have their pro's and cons. They can be great fun and make lots of isk. But they can also be a pain in the arse to get into a fleet and can offer some risk of loosing your ship, if you're logi doesnt pay attention or knows what he's doing. in general though i've found them to be very safe. (never lost a ship myself and only once had a ship destroyed that was in my fleet).

Only thing I cant tell is how they fare after the recent nerf they've had (-10% isk for Vanguard sites) and having to kill every ship in order to complete the site instead of the triggers. Still above all else they should be a good way to make ISK in high sec (or low and null if you like)

give them a try when you have time and see for yourself how you like them

Well ok then, thanks for all the info everyone! I think I'm going to bust out a legion for incursions.

Really thanks a ton for all the input.

P.S. Does anyone happen to have a link for a fitting for an incursion Legion?

That's a Tengu it's an Caldari Strategic Cruiser.

Yes the Tengu is just that much better than the other T3 cruisers at l4 missions sadly.

Legion is better in incursions.
Legion can run sites in C1-C3 for weeks without ammo supply unlike Tengu.

I know the tengu is "better" but tbh I have yet to see a single caldari ship that didnt look like trash to me, which is why I asked about the legion/loki. At this point im pretty set on flying a legion for incursion purposes I'm just not sure how best to fit it. and more than just the standard fitting im curious as to what modules are best for it.

This is what I used for Blitz fleets(Legion only gangs, that do NCOs), with imps and heat you get a bit over 1k DPS with a very high ROF what is nice for fighting other gangs in the DPS department. For Assaults, another EANM instead of the 4. heat sink and a AB instead the 3. TC works out better. The general question of Sensor booster vs TC for this sites really depends on your internet connection and the lag in the system(quite noticeable if you spam locks and F1 as quick as you can with 100+ in system) from my experience.
