I can't seem to find a relevant thread regarding my issue, so I'm starting a new thread about this.

The last time I logged in to EVE was after the last patching done, which was.. Last Thursday? Can't really remember.

Today, just now, when I tried to run EVE via the Launcher, it popped up box saying that it's "Downloading launcher update".
Next, it attempted to run "updater.exe" from within the launcher\cache folder and prompted me for UAC. I granted it permission and it went about its business of installing the launcher.

Next, nothing happens. I waited for a few minutes, and checked the Task Manager, no signs of EVE application activities. I ran the EVE Launcher via the desktop shortcut, and it gave me the "Unsupported 16-Bit Application" error. Full text as follows:

Quote:
Unsupported 16-Bit Application
The program of feature "\??\C:\Program Files (x86)\CCP\EVE\launcher\launcher.exe" cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows. Please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64-bit Windows compatible version is available.

I am using 64-bit Windows 7 Professional OS.

As such, I can't do anything about this. I ran the repair tool and it successfully repaired the installation. Then, I ran the launcher and it didn't give me that 16-bit application error. However, it looped back to step 1 - "Downloading launcher update".

And, it just repeats the same thing as described above.

On 3rd try, I renamed the launcher folder by changing it to launcher` and then running the repair tool. Sure, it downloaded its own copy of launcher files. Seems legit. I ran the launcher shortcut, and the same issue occurs all over again from step 1 - "Downloading launcher update".

I renamed that new folder to launcher``, and ran the repair tool. This time, the updater finished installing the launcher, but it didn't stop at there. It kept looping back to running the same updater.exe, installing itself, then asking to run the updater again and again and again, in an infinite loop. I denied permission when it prompted me for UAC, and it stopped there. Now, I run the launcher shortcut... And it works.... I see the launcher screen and is validating the client as I'm writing this portion now. What on earth was that all about??? What?

Wasted 30 minutes just trying to figure this out when I just wanted to log in and queue skills.. Why was it 16-bit in the first place? Why did the infinite looping occur? Why is it working now?

I still have the 2 previous faulty launcher folders intact if CCP needs it for analysis. I'll just leave this thread here for those who encounters this specific problem.

Just want to be clear, that I was not able to see the launcher screen at all since it never allowed me to run it in the first place, and this is not about patching the game. This is about the launcher's updater failing to update itself properly and thus causes the launcher to fail. I was still able to run the fully-patched game via the "exeFile.exe" file.

If anyone posting after this has issues updating the game, please look in some other threads instead and not here.
