Eve fic..........room for humour/off the wall ?

I've recently been reading a few of the Eve fic stories .........mostly pretty good.........although I don't see an awful lot of comedy or humour in these stories.

Over the years I've been doing stories and such for my alliance/corp based on in game characterizations of my fellow pilots.......these have pretty much been of a comedy nature and not really following the 'lore' of Eve and of a style that allows the reader to use their immagination ( assume the reader is familure with the stories subject and characters)

My question now is wether or not there is room for stories like these in Eve fiction ?

To give a slight idea as to the style I'm refering to here's a brief taster.....................the story starts at The Legion of Spoon (CVA) home station somewhere in Providence......................

’T’was the Night Before Christmas’

As the snow fell, on this cold dark evening, and began to build up on the office window sill a solitary figure toiled in the light of a small candle.

T’was the night before Christmas and Ebenezer Daedalus was busy in his office, his spoon shaped quill was on fire as he scratched his way through a pile of Spoon paperwork.

‘Why the fork can’t some bright spark invent a bloody pen’ thought Ebenezer as he dipped into the ink pot once again,‘ after all, we got spaceships and stuff, but no forking pens’.

A red light blinkety blinked on his desktop monochrome monitor indicating trouble in Spoon HQ, picking up his candle and moving to the comms console, he reached for the mic.

Ebenezer cleared his throat and said to all his minions ,“ Whomever has that light on, kindly turn it off, your 10 minutes are up, have you no idea how much it costs to run this place…..humph…..bah humbug……..thank you “ and to himself said ” damn peasants ..meh.”

Pushing the send button again, Ebenezer shouted “ AND SOMEBODY GET A SUIT ON AND FIX THAT OZONE LEAK, THERE’S CRAP ALL OVER MY WINDOW”

Stand aside for an Eve Online version of Ciaphas Cain the series Big smile. Warhammer 40K

I mean that universe is even grimmer than Eve Online so I dont see how it cant be done.

And from how well the series is perceived, it has a pretty large fanbase, me included.

I'd definitely go for an Amarr Templar who is secretly a Sani Sabik follower whose secondary profession is that of a rogue trader as the EVE online version of Ciaphas Cain. And I would want a female Gallentean slave accompanying him who is secretly a True Sansha Colonel researching the emotion "Love" as a directive from Kuvakei's Mind to play Jurgen's role.

I demand somebody make a fiction for this!

Hell I demand somebody make a movie like Clear Skies for this!

I've seen abit of humor here and there and some comedy stuff but not alot. I've been thinking about making some story's just for a small laugh. Like a comics in the paper. Short, sweet and funny. :)

Eve has always been dark and reflective of humanity's baser nature.. Humour. unless well done, just screams "cheese" to me, but, hey, to each their own.. Lol

I despise "stupid" comedy, such as Jim Cary and Wil Farrel represent, but, then I am likely in the minority..

It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then, and it's a poor sort of memory that only works backward.

I think there's certainly room for humor - just look at this chronicle: http://community.eveonline.com/background/potw/default.asp?cid=21-05-07

However like in that chronicle, I think it's more of a subtle humor that suits the setting better, rather than off the wall crazy humor. Just my 2 cents.

I think almost any type of humour would work within the realm of EVE. After all, humour is simply a (sometimes) surprisingly novel way of looking at the world. It just so happens that the world is EVE. Often even absurdism complements the nihilistic streak in this game.

e.g. When "Best of Show" eats the judge seems ripe for incorporation.

One of my very favourite fiction writers, podcaster/bloggers is Seismic Stan, he's funny, a fine writer, a good researcher and all round top/solid human-bean. Check out Freebooted I have disagreed with him but, he's impossible not to love. He's the antidote, take liberally or your soul may wither.
p.s.I miss him on Voices from the Void

~blush~

Wow, stumbling across this has made my day. Thank you so much Evet, that's one of the nicest things I've ever had written about me (well certainly on the EVE-O forums, at least).

Unless that's actually comedy that I missed and the joke's on me. In which case, good job. ;)

I'm in total agreement that there's room for more humour in EVE, "internet spaceships is serious business" be damned. Shakespeare himself accepted that a dash of comedy is needed in even the most serious of tragedies - if nothing else but to provide contrast.

But since you kindly brought it up, I may as well take the opportunity to shamelessly link my stuff. I've done a fair.bit.of.satire on Freebooted (check the 'comedy' tag for more) and some comedy podcast skits (mainly lampooning The Mittani), but aside from the script for the Tech Focus segments of the Tech4 broadcasts, I don't think I've ever written any out-and-out EVE comedy fiction. Well, not deliberately anyway.

If you were interested, here are links to the main 3 episodes of the Tech4 News Podcast (you'd have to scrub through for the comedy segments - they're in the 2nd half of each episode).

Episode 1: Investigating Sleepers
Episode 2: The Capsuleer Threat
Episode 3: Shades of Sansha

The majority of my comedy audio skits (originally made for the now defunct EVE Commune podcast) can be found here.

My old corpmate Greenbeard (sadly no longer playing EVE) does written comedy better than me. He wrote a three part EVE fiction series called Pay Peanuts, Get Monkeys, which he's using as inspiration for a novel he's writing. That's the closest thing I've got to written EVE comedy.

In other news, if anyone is interested, I'm hoping to return to podcasting in some form in the near future.

Edit: Just realised I forgot to mention Incarna: The Text Adventure. I guess that counts as comedy EVE fiction after all. :/
