I like that its a single sharded sandbox where I can take someone's stuff and I actually get to keep it. Money, ships, modules, entire regions... try scamming someone in World of Warcraft.

I like that the developers of Eve Online are generally hands off when it comes to players doing horrid things to each other. Eve Online is virtual Somolia.

I like that the single sharded nature of Eve Online creates some of the weirdest high powered internet video game politics I've ever seen including a bewildering array of mental complexes, primarily cognitive dissonance or double think (E.g.: A enemy alliance thinking that they are winning the war by blowing up lots of our ships while we continue to take sovereignty over their entire region). Its fascinating and frequently hilarious.

Pretty much everything I like about Eve Online comes down to its single shard and sandboxed nature. Eve Online shows us exactly what human beings are capable of when laws and mortality are removed.

You asked me once, what was in Room 101. I told you that you knew the answer already. Everyone knows it. The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world.

3 things come to mind for me.

1. Scale:
Eve is HUGE. You're not pinned to a tiny island or planet, the entire galaxy is your playground. I remember the first time I warped in my nooby little ibis and my jaw hit the floor as I watched what at the time for me was giant planet slide off and disappear into less that pin prick. It was an amazing image and sensation, a beutiful one too.

2. Persistance
The clock doesn't stop ticking when you look away, and neather does it fix itself after a couple of minutes if you choose to break it. What you do has a lasting effect on the world around you even if you're not there to see it.

3. Risk and Value
Eve is the only game ever that has litterally given me the shakes, an effect most horror games would only dream of having. The persistance of the world allows one to experiance actual risk, value, and most importantly, loss. If you lose something, its gone, forever and you lose that time and wealth spent to get that object. This puts weight behind our actions, it gives actual value and consiquences to our choices, something which eve has become extremely potent at.

From the perspective of someone who's been here for just over a week:

It's nice to be overwhelmed by a game. There are just soooo many things to do, places to see, and people to meet. Too often games are trying to dumb things down and funnel you into a specific direction. Not here. Want to shoot stuff? Go for it. Change your mind? Here, try your hand at marketing. Maybe you like to look at product lists all day, and try to turn a profit. Whatever you want.

I like having game mechanics that are sophisticated and difficult to understand at first. The first time I flew my Thorax, I couldn't hit anything at all with my turrets, even at optimal range. After some head scratching and experimenting, I figured out that my tracking speed was too low for that range, so I bought some ammo with mid/high range, and suddenly I was killing stuff again.

I like that death has real consequence. When I lose my 15mil ship, and I only have 20mil in the bank, I understand that the mistake I just made can't happen again, unless I want to go back to flying a starter frigate. And since death is mostly avoidable (in pve, at least), I have nobody to blame but myself.

The graphics are simple and beautiful. The ship design is great. You really feel like you're warping through vast amounts of space as your ship flies from place to place. It creates a really cool atmosphere for whatever activity you're doing.

A player run economy that works?! Awesome! If you want to see what a crap economy looks like, that was designed by imbeciles, just go play Diablo 3. It's amazing how many moving parts there are in this game's economy, and how fluid it is. And the fact that it's been functioning for years without crashes (it hasn't crashed, has it?) is amazing.

I could continue, but I won't. I'll just say that I decided to pay for a real subscription after just 7 days, because I'm more than happy to support good, creative game developers.

(Oh yeah... and the avatars are crazy fun to mess with while I'm waiting 4 days for Drones 5 to level up Big smile)

I like that CCP accepts with humility (atleast publicly) some very harsh criticisms from it's playerbase, and hopefully realizes that it's because we care so much about this game.

It is a symptom of madness that thoughts become uncontrollably disjointed. This can be encouraged.

I love fitting guns on ships, and loading them, and then shooting them, and reloading repeat... the target isn't very important.

Also missiles are fun too, I just rarely have enough high slots for them, increase number of high slots to x2? /petition

What? No...
