Guys, I went yesterday to the theater to watch The Avengers. It was awesome. Good lines, great action takes, good humor, good 3D, and a post credits surprise that was awesome. I loved it and I'm going to watch it again.

PS.: I live in Brazil, and it started showing here today (i went to the 23:55 session).

It's rare to see a positive review about anything on these forums. Regardless I am still going to go watch it considering that I've liked the entire series so far except for Hulk which I still haven't watched yet (the one that coincides with the series).

Agreed.

Even I tend to bee-hatch-slap movies before they come out, can't remember if this was one of them, but word 'round the campfire is they really worked on the characters and story to satisfy fans, and even regular people.

But...

You gotta be pretty fuckin' crap at writing if you can't make an ensemble cast superhero movie work.

All you need is two-three key scenes per character to nail it. Then just add CGI + conflict resolution of at least two characters, put in a blender and ker-blammo, you got $500 mill at the BO.

Saw it today in a regular, old-fashioned 2-D theater. As popcorn movies go, it is the best I have seen in a very long time. Good cast, good script, good acting, good directing, and some great one-liners. It's not "Citizen Kane" but it delivers perfectly on all the expectations you might have in this genre.

Robert Downey Jr. is in top form, Mark Ruffalo is the best Bruce Banner to date, and the Hulk steals the show. His fight with Loki probably has the highest "Awesomeness per second" of any comic book movie, ever (if you've seen it or read the spoilers on IMDB, you'll know what I mean...Blink ).

They're saying that Avengers has set an all-time record for opening weekend boxoffice and is already well past half a billion globally; it will be interesting to see if TDKR comes near this behemoth in ticket sales.

Next week: Dark Shadows! Sweet.

It's looking like a good summer for the studios.

PS. to poster above, not seeing Captain America will not cause you any issues with this movie. Thor is a tad more of a prerequisite but not much.

Name a shrub after me.  Something prickly and hard to eradicate.

Expendables 2: having even more testosterone per second than Expendables 1. All it needs now is for Steven Seagal to be cast in (altho there's rumour that him and Van Damme don't work together), and for somebody to bring Bruce Lee back from the dead, and we would have a movie with so much concentrated whoopass that it would become its own black hole.

Shoot! Edit didn't take. F'n Forums.. I saw Avengers... Awesome, script was well played and Joss did a great job trying to stick to the story. Didn't get all James Cameron on it.

I originally meant to add that the movie was great. The trailers, of course ignited the fervor for Prometheus and after the 3rd name was mentioned in Expendables 2, and they kept coming with more big $$$ names... Holy crap! That movie better do well just to break even!

If the laughs don't get ya the getting involved with the characters will. Take your kid brothers and sisters and even girlfriends. All around me I could hear people experiencing the movie different than. Me. I grinned laughed and guffawed while they oohed ahhed sighed and groaned.. Its like these character all could bring different people into the movie for different reasons and they were not disappointed. Demographic for male and female was different. I'd say male was 6 to 60, I heard a lot of women in the audience, their screams seemed under thirty. I wasn't really scouting for grannies though.

The movie was definetly fun. Good action scene and humour throughout. The Hulk stole the show at the end producing two laugh out loud moments. However the movie does have a few 'small' issues. I will stress again (SMALL) issues but since everyone sings the films praise I'll offer up some devils advocating.

[SPOILERS]***************************************[SPOILERS]

The army led by Loki fits the standard evil futuristic aliens template and are utterly forgettable. Despite this alien army threatening Loki, nothing is made of it. There is no reversal of Loki's character or Loki conjuring a plan to come out on top which makes the whole scene where he is threatened redundant.

I'm tired of seeing films with localised invasions. Always New Bloody York. Where the horde pours in to attack and we are supposed to feel the weight of their presence yet a handful of heroes can hold them all back?! Independence Day and War of the Worlds showed how to make an alien invasion seem one sided. Avengers and Transformers showed that a few random people can hold them back despite being told that they will conquer the entire earth.

Despite randomly appearing throughout the movie to do a few evil things. Loki is pretty hands off. He seemingly spends the entire last act of the movie standing in one spot so that he can have a conversation with each of the heroes.

There is never any fear that our heroes will be hurt. At one point Loki stabs Thor in what should have been a dark moment, a show of how far he has fallen. Yet Thors fine in the next scene and Loki continues to stand around in the same spot.

So despite the actor playing Loki doing a great job the movie is not interested in the bad guy. Its all about each of the heroes and how they interact with one another which is a great shame. The greatest Heroes have the greatest enemies. Ask Batman.

Avengers is a must see if you like action super hero movies period. The entire cast is fantastic and superb directing. What I liked also that even though it is a large cast all the characters had their one liners, great fight scenes and some character development. That is not easy to do with a large cast.

Next on the must see list looks to be Promethius.

Finally a good summer for movies.

I'd have liked to see more development with Loki. After all the attention he got in Thor, he seemed a little shallow in this movie. It felt like there were plot developments being set up and then not followed-through with, which seems very un-Whedon-like. Makes me wonder if there will be an even more awesome Director's Cut.

Great movie, will definitely be owning this one (and all its prerequisites, which are each good in their own right).

I loved it and I never saw Thor, Captain America or the Hulk. So you can see it without seeing those, but I'm sure it would help to have the background from them.

I'm seriously contemplating seeing it again because it was so good.

Blueray release is going to have 30 extra minutes added into the film. And from what I understand there is another hour of cut footage. So yeah a lot of things are rushed, and I think loki was part of that. Same with Captin america, did you notice at the end when they ask him to give the orders? Apparently there was part where he proves he should be in charge or something.

Also they cut a scene appaerently where he meet his girl friend from the orginal movie where she is all old and stuff.

I would like to see the movie with more plot and story, but I understand that non comic book people wouldn't really enjoy another 30 mins of talking. I would though... :P
