A short piece of advice on picking skills to train

This is a little bit of advice I've given new players that I've been helping over the past few months, some of whom had taken up my offer of a buddy invite, some of whom were simply new members of our corp.

If you're wondering what skills will be useful to train, take a look on your character sheet. Under the skills link you will find Certificates. Open the certificates planner on that screen and look at the Core and Defence certificates. Don't follow them slavishly, simply use them as a guide as to what skills will make your ships more useful and effective and work around them as a starting point. Those skills will affect all the ships you fly and as you get some of those trained you can look at other certificates for a few ideas on what types of skills you can train to help with the aspects of the game you enjoy.

I also suggest that you take a look at EVEmon, a very useful 3rd party utility that helps you set up skill plans, monitor your skill queue and see what skills will be needed as prerequisities to train others as well as what skills are needed for particular ships and modules in the game. To download just click on the Installer link on the right hand column

WoW holds your hand until end game, and gives you a cookie whether you win or lose. EVE not only takes your cookie, but laughs at you for bringing one in the first place...
