Getting into solo PvP, general questions

Good stuff from Spank and shal ri!

Azual Skoll maintains a nice resource on the different ships you might meet:

http://www.evealtruist.com/p/article-index.html

While it obviously can't cover every possible fit and usage for ships, it does give a rather excellent overview on the typical fits and how to fight them.

Concerning the Incursus, you can take pretty much anything that a Rifter could (or any other decent T1 frig), which is not an awful lot. Other T1 frigs, indies, PVE ships. Anything with drones is dangerous in a T1 frig, you might not be able to tank the drones before you can pop them. Still there seem to be quite many pilots flying around in T1 frigs, and why not, crazy cheap and crazy fun :)

Maybe try rails and small rep for soloing, blasters are a bit more challenging but I like them and with T2 ammo you have decent range and more than decent damage these days- Null shoots far, and Void really hurts and small blasters have no problems with tracking.

Comet is a solid upgrade before you get to AFs, and you can also try Vexor, but T1 cruisers have sort of limited engagement envelope at the moment. Frig pilots might run from a Vexor, and it's a bit too lightly tanked and slow to take on BCs - of course ymmv and it's not expensive to try out. Same goes for Thorax. Other than that, what shal ri said. Ishkur and Myrm are great all-rounders. Ishtar is very skill point -intensive, but there are some pretty insane videos the tube displaying it's potential (with links and drugs obv.) Talos likewise needs T2 Large Guns, but it can do the anti-Gallente kiting thing rather well. Cloaky Proteus is also a formidable solo ship, and might be faster to get into.

The Incursus is a brilliant starting ship, just keep away from AF's and probably Dessies too. It can still take on some navy and pirate frigs too, or it's so cheap you don't lose much by trying P

Once you get a few skillpoints under your belt the Tristan becomes a brilliant cheap option and is exceptionally good at taking down Dramiels which I'm pleased to see are still about frequently and nearly always underestimate the little Tristan Blink

I have nothing against boxing, its a perfectly valid tactic, but dont use a force multiplier and complain that five people are attacking your two because frankly you deserve it.

Otherwise good advice, respect.

i not complaining about the blob factor its just a fact low sec and having the falcon gives u something to level the playing field if and/or when u do get jumped by 5 or so ppl.

It's not dishonorable to have a Falcon Alt. It's not dishonorable to use that Falcon Alt when engaging a force with significant number advantages. It is dishonorable to use that Falcon Alt in a fair fight. The challenge is not using that Falcon Alt when you are losing that fair fight. If you manage to resist, more power to you. If not, you are a worthless noob with a Falcon Alt. And that is how Falcon Alts work. Cool

tbh all you really need to do is read Wens' blog, and bring a few rifters to Heild. There's always some RIFTA dudes around willing to 1v1.

First off, Kudos to the OP for wanting to try solo PVP. Fleet work is fun but I have had some of my most rewarding pvp expeiences solo.

Secondly, with the recent Destroyer changes how would an Arty Thrasher fair in solo low sec work ?

I have been away from Eve for six months so have zero experience with any of the recent changes, due to return in a week Big smile

Solo Arty thrasher can take on every frig except AF's and even half of the AF's are viable targets despite their increase in tank/damage. For about 10m a pop there's no reason not to be gung-ho with them. If you can catch stuff, and it doesn't manage to get right under your tracking in time then they are deadly.

scram web mwd fit them. when stuff goes for you, or you are chasing them down.... start firing in falloff and by the time you get into scram web range they should already be half dead :D

I think he means just read it in general, since it has lots of good advice, also note the rifter guide link at the top of his blog.

http://www.rifterdrifter.com/

And the spirit of Bricksauce's message is 'keep it simple and just get out there and pew' which I agree with. Read up in your idle time but don't sit down all evening reading theory when you could be logged in to eve and actually enjoying yourself watching spaceships explode :D

True enough. :) I've got a short-term skill plan laid out that will get me some basic fitting and essential skills I somehow missed before. Should only take a few days.

I've also been looking at that Eve is Easy solo shield rupture video, and though I think I can follow the general guidelines (I still feel lost as to what to do when I see multiple ships), I'm not really sure how to estimate proper ranges for hostile ships. I know about checking the turret and making a quick estimation as to whether or not something is close/long range, but estimating a numeric range is still a mystery. This will get better with experience I hope.

Once you get comfortable in t1 frigs take a look at destroyers. Dessies can give most AF's a good run for their money and they also put out enough damage that you can make the initial kill before backup lands.

Also find a good pvp channel and ask tons of questions. Most solo pvpers love to talk shop and give advice. When you die ask the guy that killed you for tips. Very few people that are actually good at pvp will smack talk you.

You should be looking at your overview for ranges. Have it sorted by range and also add columns for velocity and transversal. This will give you the information on all the targets and help you dictate position on the field.

It definitely gets better with experience so keep at it!

ALSO: Remember you have 30 seconds on jump in where you are immune so even if you jump into a nightmare gatecamp from hell you still have some time to assess the situation, and in the worst scenario, your best bet is to heat mwd and burn back to gate. In a frig this is generally easy to achieve.

I thought transversal wasn't important enough to put on the overview?

Also, is it just me or do you guys find it really hard to read the combat messages before they dissapear? eg; "John Doe has hit you with 200mm autocannons and did 200 damage" or whatever the message goes.

I'm under the impression that this is how people figure out what weapons the hostile is using but the message is too fast for me to comprehend especially given all the other things going on.

I like to keep transversal on because it lets you now if people are moving straight at you or not. I guess its just another way to keep track of the movements of enemy ships. I wouldn't say I spend a ton of timing looking at this column but there are times when its useful.

As for figuring out guns I generally just use the look at function. There have been times when i'm more concerned with the combat messages and I pull up the log and can keep a closer eye on them.

Yeah, I already had velocity set up on my overview, but not transversal. I'm not even sure I can fit that on my tight screen. I guess 'Look at' will have to do for now.

On the message thingy, you can use the log for that; it's now tucked away under the "eve menu" (on top of your characters portrait in-game) and shows all recieved messages of the current session. (Meaning that if you dock or jump into a different system it clears itself)
