Noobs like stealth bombers because the are fairly cheap and they seem to think they are more likely to stay alive.

I like the idea of SBs because:
- They’re relatively cheap to lose;
- The skill load makes them relatively accessible;
- The stealth aspects let me decide when / if I’m going to engage, rather than have an engagement forced on me by someone else;
- I can potter around on my own and not screw anyone else up if I mess up or if I whimp out on an engagement opportunity.

Thanks guys. This thread and the other one in this forum have stirred me up and tonite I am heading out to try create a little bit of bomber mayhem in some poor unsuspecting low-end w-system.

I guess I am almost a 'vet' by now. Hopefully not too bitter and managing to help more than I hinder. I build and sell many things, including large collections of bookmarks.

So every time I meet somebody who has never PVPed before, they always talk about their amazing stealth bombers.. And how they are going to go PVP in them and gatecamp... yadda yadda yadda.

Why are pvp-noobs so obsessed with stealth bombers? What made them think stealth bombers are even viable for solo pvp?

The only reason I ask is because I literally see it everywhere I go.

Stealth bombing sounds cool to folks who havent done a lot of pvp in this game yet. You can hide cloaked. Drop a bomb and then warp off. Wait for weak opponents that you could actually solo in a bomber with torps (perception not reality).

Realistically in high sec and low sec these ships really arent that useful for pvp other than spies or with a large pack of them. However people do manage to get kills with them. Sometimes even solo kills. I once chased high sec war targets into low sec with my bomber and killed several of their miners. They thought that they were safe because they had some pirate friends who let them live there "under their protection." Naturally i just avoided the pirate friends and found some of them bearing it up. In null sec there are guys who make their living with bombers. They usually cloak up at jump bridges or gates or go around looking for ratters who are tanking a lot of rats and then try to pop them while they are weakest. There are guys who roam around looking for fights in progress and then fling bombs into the melee to get on kill mails. This can be quite effective. I once went to an engagement between Panda Team and Blast in fountain where I knew Panda had a tower coming out. I knew there would likely be a fight and that Blast would likely bring caps. Me and two others from my corp (which had temporarily been set neutral by blast) came in bombers and flung bombs into the fight. We ended up on 7 Blast capital kills and would have been on a super kill but they managed to kill the bubblers and get that off the field before losing it.

Don't ask questions, collect killmails.

I think its the allure of battleship weapons, frigate agility and the ability to hide makes it sound like the greatest PvP ship ever.

Easily trained.

You don't have to engage if you don't want.

When you do engage it's usually against something you know you can take.

Cheap to fly, and thus affordable on a newer player's budget.

Big shiny graphics of doom.

Allows you to fly Gallente and win on DPS terms.

.... so basically the same reasons I still fly mine?

The bomb isn't really all that useful in solo PvP, it's mainly a fleet weapon. But it's great for trolling people, which to be fair is great fun even if it's not particularly effective. And the torps are great for taking down solo BCs, which are all over the place, or zapping delivery ships before the guards can nab you just to be a ****. Plus, of course, on the rare occasions that someone's dumb enough to rat in BS without watching local, hey, free stuff.
