When you have various (>5) drones in drone bay how does the game decide which ones launch?

I'm sure someone's tested this. I'm just curious if it's based on drone type or if it's random or what.

It selects the ones that use the most drone BW.

In my experience it starts out by deploying the drones you specifically don't want launched, and then launches drones in the order of least to most desirable.

(in all honesty though, I haven't a clue, but it always manages to launch drones I didn't want at that moment)

As mzxf says, the game usually launches the ones you didn't need at that moment in time.

An hour ago I was in fleet and I thought I only had EC-300's in my drone bay but I had a flight of Hobgoblin II's and a flight of EC-300's.

Hit the launch button for what was supposed to be only EC-300's and ended up with 2 EC-300's and 3 Hobgoblin II's. What?

Absolutely no idea how or why the game launches the drones that it does. I always have them grouped normally to avoid embarrassing moments like that.

The drone-Ai is so broken it even infects your ship.

You do know you can create groups in the drone window and give launch orders to a named group rather than the random selection in the Drone Bay Roll

This. Just create groups.

I just went with Overlord names - Browns, Reds, Greens, Blues, ALL!

Using groups means extra clicks. Extra clicks take extra time. Extra time means dead ships.

Doesnt mean extra clicks if you have your drone window open with the groups visible. Derp.

Using groups is probably 1 possibly 2 extra clicks to get the right Drones launched, worth it to get the right Drones launched compared to cursing because you have some random selection launched and then you died Big smile

Right click on the Group name and left click Launch Drones - clearly a difficult and time consuming task Lol

Except when it decides to close them on you. Doesn't seem to do it as often with the in-bay section as it does with the in-space section, but it'll still find a way to screw you over.

Pretty sure when you launch from a full bay it does some calculations to pick a flight that will somewhat match the actual proportion of drones in your drone by, set that aside, and recalculate based on what is most likely to result in death (either yours or the drones).

I can say for sure that it has a *strong* preference for unpackaged drones, if you have some mix of packaged/unpackaged drones. As in, I've never actually seen it launch packaged drones without there being no other option.

Let's see... max of 1-2 extra seconds selecting proper group of drones in window, or 10 seconds of launching drones, finding out you've launched the wrong ones, recalling them, and relaunching. Oh, and that's not even taking into account you wouldn't be guaranteed the right ones on the second go. Which option sounds more attractive?

The biggest problem with using drone groups is that it swaps the order of "launch drones" and "show info" in the right click menu.

I too am mad about the client not being able to read my mind as I refuse to use every sensible tool availbable to help me...
WTF are you on about??? Fille your dronebay with 1 drone type only if you want minimum hassle?

I suspect they're launched in whatever order they are stored in the data structure server-side, with no special effort put into having a coherent order.

Use drone groups. You can set them up beforehand, and you're good to go.

The drone UI badly needs a revamp, though. Very badly.

You'd think it would be smart enough to at least pick all the same type or something. If I'm carrying 3 flights of sentries and hobs for a Domi mission boat, I'll end up with 2 wardens, a Curator, and 2 hobs or something phenomally stupid. What use could a mixture like that possibly have...

I learned to group my drones long ago.

It launched the drones you tell it to launch....
